If your Medium Shield will not equip in Arc Raiders, the issue is almost always your augment. The shield is not broken. Your build is blocking it.
Medium Shields, also called blue shields, are tied to augment compatibility. Equip the wrong augment and the game locks you out. Equip the right one and the shield slots instantly.
A Medium Shield sits between Light and Heavy Shields.
It gives more protection than a Light Shield without the brutal movement penalty of a Heavy Shield. That makes it the best default pick for most raids.
| Shield Type | Color | Strength | Weakness | Best Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light Shield | Green | Fastest movement | Low protection | Budget loot runs |
| Medium Shield | Blue | Best balance | Small slowdown | Standard raids |
| Heavy Shield | Purple | Highest protection | Heavy slowdown | Tank builds |
The big reason Medium Shields feel so good: they protect you without killing your ability to reposition.
In Arc Raiders, movement is survival. A shield that keeps you alive but gets you caught is not always a win.
The game checks your active augment, not just your inventory.
If your augment only allows Light Shields, your Medium Shield will stay locked even if you own it.
| Augment Text | Meaning | Medium Shield Works? |
|---|---|---|
| Up to Light Shield | Light only | No |
| Up to Medium Shield | Light + Medium | Yes |
| Up to Heavy Shield | Light + Medium + Heavy | Yes |
The key rule is simple:
Up to Heavy includes Medium. Up to Light does not.
If you swapped builds and your Medium Shield suddenly stopped working, check your augment first. This is the most common mistake.
Follow this exact order.
Go to your loadout screen.
Check the augment you currently have equipped. Do not check only your stash.
Open the augment details.
Look for shield wording like:
If it says Light Shield only, that augment blocks your Medium Shield.
Use an augment that supports Medium or Heavy shields.
Combat augments are usually the safest bet. For example, an augment like Combat MK2 can support up to Heavy Shield, which also unlocks Medium.
Go to your shield slot.
Equip or drag in the Medium Shield.
If it still will not slot, your compatible augment is probably not active.
Medium Shields work best with augments that support fighting, survival, or flexible looting.
| Augment Type | Compatibility | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Combat Augments | Often yes | PvP, Arc fights | Reliable Medium Shield support |
| Survivor Augments | Often yes | Balanced raids | Strong all-round option |
| Looting Augments | Depends | Farming routes | Some are Light-only |
| Light-only Augments | No | Speed runs | Blocks Medium Shields |
Do not assume every looting augment works. Some looting builds trade shield size for utility.
If you want to farm safely, use a looting or survivor augment that still allows Medium Shield.
Medium Shield is the sweet spot.
It is not the fastest. It is not the tankiest. But it wins because Arc Raiders punishes extremes.
Light Shield is faster, but weaker.
That works for cheap loot runs. It does not feel great when you get clipped by Arc damage or caught by another squad.
Medium Shield gives you more time to react. That extra buffer often means you reach cover instead of dropping in the open.
Heavy Shield has more health, but the slowdown hurts.
Common player testing puts the movement penalties around:
| Shield Type | Approx. Slowdown | Real Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Light Shield | Lowest | Best sprint speed |
| Medium Shield | Around 5% | Barely noticeable in most fights |
| Heavy Shield | Around 15% | Very noticeable when escaping |
Over a 50-meter sprint, the difference between Light and Medium is small. The difference between Light and Heavy can be more than two seconds.
That is huge.
Two seconds is a door closing. A line of sight breaking. An extraction missed. A fight lost.
Medium Shields are also cheaper to run than Heavy Shields in most cases.
| Shield | Resource Pressure | Best Use |
|---|---|---|
| Light Shield | Low | Budget runs |
| Medium Shield | Moderate | Daily raids |
| Heavy Shield | High | Specific tank setups |
A Medium Shield may use materials like Arc Circuitry and Battery. Heavy Shields can require rarer parts such as Power Rods.
That makes Medium Shield the better repeat-use option. You can bring it often without feeling like every death bankrupts your stash.
Use a Medium Shield when you expect mixed pressure.
That means looting, fighting, rotating, and extracting.
If you are not sure what the raid will turn into, run Medium.
It covers the most situations with the fewest downsides.
If you plan to fight, Light Shield is risky.
Medium gives enough protection to survive bad trades while keeping your movement sharp.
Extraction is about reaching cover and staying mobile.
Heavy Shield can save you in a straight damage trade, but Medium Shield is better when you need to move, reset, and escape.
Medium Shield is strong, but not universal.
If your build needs a Light-only augment, accept the Light Shield.
Do not fight the system. The augment decides the shield cap.
If your entire plan is to avoid fights and move fast, Light Shield is still valid.
Just know the risk: one bad angle can end the run.
If your squad needs a frontliner, Heavy Shield has a role.
You trade speed for raw durability. Make sure your team plays around that slower pace.
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Medium Shield will not equip | Augment only allows Light | Swap to Medium/Heavy-compatible augment |
| Shield worked before, now locked | You changed augments | Check active augment |
| Shield is in inventory but unusable | Build does not support it | Read augment details |
| Heavy-compatible augment but still blocked | Wrong augment not active | Equip it in current loadout |
| Looting build blocks shield | Looting augment may be Light-only | Use compatible survivor/looting augment |
The fix is almost always the same: check the active augment.
Your active augment probably only supports Light Shields. Equip an augment that allows Medium Shield or Heavy Shield.
Any augment that says up to Medium Shield or up to Heavy Shield should work. Combat and survivor augments are usually reliable options.
Yes. Up to Heavy includes Light, Medium, and Heavy Shields.
For most raids, yes. Medium Shield gives better protection with only a small movement penalty, around 5% in common player testing.
Usually, yes. Heavy Shield has more durability, but the roughly 15% slowdown can get you killed when rotating, chasing, or extracting.
Medium Shields in Arc Raiders are locked behind augment compatibility. If your Medium Shield will not equip, your active augment is almost certainly the problem.
Use an augment that allows Medium or Heavy Shields, then slot the blue shield normally.
For most players, Medium Shield is the best everyday shield. It beats Light Shield on survivability, avoids Heavy Shield's harsh slowdown, and offers the best balance for fighting, looting, rotating, and extracting.
