↖ Hitches In Switching To Modern Servers
The shifft to 64-bit servers came with a March 4 2025, but there was plenty of unforseen hurdles due to the overwhelming number of transfers. Like many MMO games, this meant an overwhelming number of delays where some of the server transfers were not completed even weeks later according to a GGWTB report earlier this month.
In mid-March, game developers issued an apology and acknowledged shifting to modern servers was a bit more difficult than they had anticipated. Executive Producer Ciccolini put everything into context when he said, "We have completed well over 1 million character transfers since opening the transfers. We far outperformed what we expected." In any scenario, this is a description of the community's hope for better performing and stabilizing server.
↖ New Servers Set To Launch
To mitigate congestion and cater to the increasing demand, the development team is planning the addition of new servers. Ciccolini recently posted on Discord stating, We will be opening a new server in Europe, and then in a few weeks, another one in the U.S. These developments are designed to help users still on the older 32-bit servers transition more easily.
Ciccolini also explained that transfers from current servers, Orcrist for example, and the other 32-bit servers' worlds will be possible to these new servers once they go live. This initiative will help many users waiting to benefit from the better performance of the 64-bit infrastructure.
↖ Revamp of Housing System Is Now Live
Apart from these changes regarding server capacity, the LOTRO developers have also provided an update on the housing system for the 64 bit worlds. Community manager Cordovan revealed on forums.lotro.com that both Premium and Classic Housing will be available progressively starting March 31, 2025. But they start with the introduction by neighborhoods ordered alphabetically, with Premium Housing areas prioritized.
THe schedule is organized as follows:
As Cordovan pointed out, more housing brokers will be stationed at each district to aid in purchasing properties. Nonetheless, the standard For Sale notices will be inactive at this time. There will also be bridges where developers attend for player question and answer sessions during the transition period, so communcation is easier.
Date | Location |
March 31 | Belfalas |
April 1 | Eastfold/Erebor |
April 2 | Kingstead/Lyndelby |
April 3 | Bree-land/Falathlorn |
April 4 | Shire/Thorin's Hall |
↖ Looking Ahead
This marks an important step for The Lord of the Rings Online with the incorporation of newly-optimized servers, plus the integration of a brand new housing system. There are still issues around the dramatic demand, but, it is nice to see the developers taking these steps to better the player experience. The addition of new servers and finally addressing the long-awaited housing system further cements LOTRO as a cherished MMORPG amidst fierce competition in the gaming world.
