Modern Warfare 4 Beta Guide: PC Specs, Preload Times, Rewards & Twitch Drops

The MW4 beta isn't a simple download and play situation. Separate install. New PC requirements. Fewer forced restarts. Real rewards on the line. Here's everything you need before the servers open, stripped down to what actually matters.

Modern Warfare 4 Beta Guide: PC Specs, Preload Times, Rewards & Twitch Drops

Beta Dates & Preload Times

PhaseStartPreload
Early Access Beta Fri, Aug 21 – 11:00 AM PT Thu, Aug 20 – 9:00 AM PT
Open Beta (Weekend 2) Fri, Aug 28 – 10:00 AM PT Thu, Aug 26 – 9:00 AM PT

Preload the second it's live. First few hours = server queues, slow store refreshes, shader compile delays. Don't be that guy still downloading when the lobby fills up.

The Beta Skips COD HQ

Big change: the beta is a standalone install, not buried in COD HQ.

  • Search your platform store directly — don't rely on the COD HQ tile.
  • Confirm you're logged into the right Activision account.
  • See a tiny placeholder file before preload opens? Ignore it. Not the real beta.

At full launch, MW4 reconnects to COD HQ (shared content with Warzone). The beta stays separate.

PC Requirements

SSD is mandatory. No exceptions. Running this on a HDD = stutter city.

Minimum

ComponentSpec
CPU Ryzen 5 5600 / i5-8400
RAM 12 GB
GPU GTX 970/1060, RX 470, or Arc A580
VRAM 3 GB
Security TPM 2.0 + Secure Boot

Recommended

ComponentSpec
CPU Ryzen 5 3600 / i7-8700
RAM 16 GB
GPU RTX 3060 Ti, RX 6700 XT, or Arc B580
VRAM 8 GB
OS Windows 11

Driver check before launch:

GPUDriver
NVIDIA 610.47
AMD 26.7.1
Intel 32.0.101.8861

Old drivers cause more beta crashes than bad hardware ever will.

TPM 2.0 & Secure Boot — Non-Negotiable

If you've played recent COD titles on this rig without issue, you're already fine. New build or older motherboard? Check BIOS now, not five minutes before launch.

Failed launch check usually means one of two things: TPM 2.0 disabled, or Secure Boot off.

Shader Preloading (PC)

PlatformBehavior
Battle.net Preloads automatically after install
Steam Preloads, but expect one shader compile on first boot

Let it run. It shows up as a tray notification and eats minimal resources. Interrupt it and you'll just eat the compile time later — right when you're trying to jump in.

Restart Required Finally Gets Cut Down

PlatformBeta Behavior
Battle.net / Steam / Xbox App No restart for most data patches
PS5 No restart for most data patches
Xbox Series X/S Still restarts during beta
Switch Still restarts

Exception: if you're already in a match when a patch drops, you might still get bumped. That's normal, not a bug.

Beta Rewards — Grind to Level 30

Progression resets. Cosmetics don't.

LevelReward
4 Emblem
8 Weapon Charm
12 Weapon Sticker
16 Calling Card
20 Operator Skin
23 Spray
26 Loading Screen
30 Weapon Blueprint

What doesn't carry over: player rank, weapon levels, weapon unlocks. What does: every cosmetic above.

Miss Weekend 1? Weekend 2 progress stacks. Level 30 is the finish line — you don't need to grind every single day.

Twitch Drops & Bonus Rewards

Extra cosmetics come from Classified Challenges, Combat Record milestones, and Twitch Drops.

Twitch Drops checklist:

1. Link Activision account to Twitch.

2. Watch eligible streams during the drop window.

3. Claim from Twitch inventory.

4. Verify it lands on the correct linked account.

Switch Twitch accounts often? Double-check the link. Old account connections are the #1 reason people miss drops.

Multiplayer: What's New

FeatureImpact
Riot shield as field upgrade Limited uptime, more tactical, pickup potential
Apex attachments (underbarrel knife launcher, guided missile) Will define early meta — expect broken combos fast
Wall ping / snapshot reveal Faster room-clearing
Ground War on Hajin Larger map, vertical fights, vehicle combat
Nuke returns Cinematic extraction sequence before detonation

Riot shield note: taking it out of the primary weapon slot kills the one guy tanks the lobby problem. If it's droppable/pickupable, expect it to matter in Domination and Hardpoint.

Apex attachments are the wildcard. Test them early — the strongest combos won't stay secret for long.

Nuke tip: survival > kill speed. Reposition after 2-3 kills. Most streak deaths happen from staying in a hot zone too long.

Pre-Beta Checklist

TaskPriority
Preload the beta High
Update GPU drivers High
Enable TPM 2.0 / Secure Boot High
Link Activision + Twitch accounts High
Let shaders preload High (PC)
Free up SSD space High
Manually check platform store High

First-match settings: motion blur off, film grain off, conservative textures if VRAM-limited, lower shadows if FPS dips. Get stable frames before you touch anything else.

Mistakes to Skip

  • Waiting for launch day to download.
  • Assuming COD HQ auto-installs the beta.
  • Skipping shader preload, then rage-quitting from stutter.
  • Ignoring TPM/Secure Boot until the check fails.
  • Only playing for kills instead of objectives (worse XP).
  • Forgetting to link Twitch before drops start.

FAQ

When does the MW4 beta start?

Early access: Friday, Aug 21, 11:00 AM PT. Open beta: Friday, Aug 28, 10:00 AM PT.

Is the beta inside COD HQ?

No. It's a standalone install on your platform store. Full launch reconnects to COD HQ.

Do beta rewards carry over to the full game?

Cosmetics yes (emblem, charm, sticker, calling card, operator skin, spray, loading screen, blueprint). Progression no (rank, weapon levels, unlocks).

Does MW4 need TPM 2.0 on PC?

Yes. TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are required. Check BIOS before beta day if you're unsure.

Is the restart required issue gone?

Mostly, on PC and PS5. Xbox Series X/S and Switch still restart during the beta.

Bottom Line

Preload early. Drivers updated. TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot on. Let shaders compile. Link your accounts before drops go live.

Then just grind to level 30, test weapons broad and early, and keep an eye on which Apex attachments break the meta first. An hour of prep beats an entire weekend of troubleshooting — every single beta, every single time.
