We would start with Hunter for pet-assisted leveling, Protection Paladin for dungeon tanking, or Warrior for a melee DPS/tank main. Use the decision table to narrow your choice, then check the failure conditions before committing; these are practical shortlists, not measured performance rankings.

Blizzard confirms that WoW Forever redesigns classes and specializations, so familiar Classic rankings are not sufficient evidence.

Best Class Picks by Content

If you want one main, choose for your most frequent activity. A solo-leveling recommendation does not establish raid DPS strength.

Choose—and know when to reconsider

Compare these starting options against the problems you encounter.

Your PriorityStarting OptionsWhat Should WorkReason to Reconsider
Pet-assisted leveling Hunter, Warlock Pet control reduces incoming pressure Pet deaths or pathing repeatedly interrupt pulls
Caster control Frost Mage Control prevents failed pulls Recovery time outweighs faster combat
Melee DPS and tanking Warrior Separate gear supports both roles Resource gaps or gear demands frustrate leveling
Dungeon tanking Protection Paladin Pack threat and mana last through pulls Loose enemies repeatedly interrupt the healer
Boss tanking Protection Warrior, Feral Druid Threat and survival hold through heavy-hit sequences You cannot recover a disrupted opener
Healing Priest, Restoration Shaman Available spells handle your group's damage pattern Essential tools are unavailable at your level
Role flexibility Druid Talents and equipment support the roles you use Switching requires gear you cannot maintain

Choose the option that solves your repeated failure; do not select a main from an unsupported S-tier label.

Compare the whole leveling route

Time combat and recovery together. A build that kills quickly but drinks after every pull may finish the route more slowly.

1. Use the same route, enemy types and start/end points.

2. Record your level, build, gear and consumables.

3. Restore health and resources before each attempt.

4. Count recovery breaks, deaths and pet failures.

5. Repeat with the alternative build under comparable conditions.

For Hunters and Warlocks, include obstacles and target changes. Stationary tests miss the time a pet spends traveling instead of attacking.

Documented Changes That Require Retesting

An older damage result becomes unreliable when its underlying interaction changes. The updates below establish specific mechanics—not a complete current-build ranking.

Fire Mage: Separate usability from damage

Blizzard's development notes document an Ignite correction removing repeated application of percentage damage bonuses. They also extend Wake of Fire to 30 seconds and Hot Streak to 20 seconds.

If your comparison used the earlier interaction, rerun it. Track total damage, expired procs and recovery time; a longer buff window does not automatically mean higher DPS.

Hunter and Druid: Read the size of the change correctly

The documented update reduces Furious Howl's Attack Power bonus by 40% and increases Wrath's base damage by approximately 50%. Neither means the entire class loses or gains that percentage of total damage.

For Hunter, separate pet-active time from damage per attack. For Druid, compare the complete rotation rather than extrapolating one spell's base-damage increase.

Tank Selection: Test Recovery Before Progression

A tank can hold a clean pull yet fail when an enemy arrives late. Test disrupted pulls, not just smooth ones.

Use these checks before committing to a tank.

Test ScenarioWhat to ObserveFailure Signal
Late add Time needed to establish control Enemy keeps attacking the healer
Early DPS opener Ability to recover initial threat Group must stop attacking repeatedly
Consecutive heavy hits Health and defensive availability between heals Survival depends on every heal landing perfectly
Extended pack pull Mana/resources and threat across enemies Recovery breaks or loose mobs stall the run

Reject the setup that repeatedly fails your group's recovery needs, even if its clean-pull damage looks better.

For Paladin, do not apply a Holy-damage threat modifier to the entire rotation. For Druid, do not confuse lacking block and parry with lacking avoidance.

We would not recommend Enhancement Shaman for progression from this material alone: its recovery and survival package has not been demonstrated here.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

These answers distinguish starting recommendations from proven rankings.

What is the best class in WoW Forever beta?

No overall winner is established by the evidence reviewed here. We would shortlist Hunter for pet-assisted leveling, Protection Paladin for dungeons and Warrior for melee DPS/tank flexibility.

What is the best DPS spec?

The reviewed sources do not establish a measured DPS winner. Compare matching gear, buffs, targets and encounter duration before trusting a tier placement.

Which tank should you choose for dungeons?

Protection Paladin is our starting option, not a verified universal winner. Check pack threat, resource recovery and late-add control across a complete run.

Is Hunter the easiest class to level?

Hunter is a practical pet-assisted option, but no timed comparison here proves it is easiest. Include pet deaths, travel and recovery when comparing it with Warlock.

Can level-30 results predict level-60 raid performance?

Level-30 results alone cannot establish level-60 raid rankings. Retest with the relevant talents, equipment and encounters, recording the build number alongside every result.
