EverQuest Legends Motes Guide: Stop Wasting Motes on Upgrades

Motes look simple until you burn a Rank 6 Mote on the wrong item and realize you can't get it back. Spells and items don't play by the same rules, and the game doesn't explain the difference. This is the cheat sheet.

EverQuest Legends Motes Guide: Stop Wasting Motes on Upgrades

Rank ≠ Tier — The First Trap

Motes start at Rank 1. Items start at Tier 0. That mismatch wrecks new players constantly.

Mote Type Rank Typical Use
Infinitesimal Mote 1 Early progress
Minor Mote 2 Low upgrades
Lesser Mote 3 Mid-low upgrades
Moderate Mote 4 Mid upgrades
Major Mote 5 Common valuable resource
Greater Mote 6 High-tier items
Superior Mote 7 Rare, valuable
Rank 8–10 8–10 Late-game only

Rule: an item needs a Mote one rank higher than its current tier. A Tier 5 item needs a Rank 6 Mote, not Rank 5. This single detail causes most wasted Motes in the game.

Spells vs Items: Completely Different Systems

  Spells Items
Accepted Motes Any rank Exact rank only
Risk Spending high ranks too early Wrong rank = unusable
XP curve Doubles per rank Flat, near 1:1
Best habit Burn low-rank Motes first Hoard high-rank Motes

Spells are forgiving. Items are not. Plan accordingly.

Spell Upgrades: Motes = XP, Full Value

Spell Mote XP doubles every rank. This means a Rank 6 Mote gives the exact same total value as two Rank 5 Motes.

Mote Rank Spell XP
1 1
2 2
3 4
4 8
5 16
6 32
7 64
8 128
9 256
10 512

Bottom line: no value is lost by using low-rank Motes on spells. Dump your Rank 1–2 stockpile into your main damage spell, heal, or CC spell. Don't feed rare Motes into spells you rarely cast — you'll want those ranks later for items.

Item Upgrades: Strict, Expensive, Unforgiving

Items don't scale like spells. A high-rank Mote barely moves the needle here.

Mote Rank Spell XP Item XP
5 16 5
6 32 6
7 64 7
8 128 8
9 256 9
10 512 10

Same Mote. Massive spell value. Tiny item value. This is why item upgrades feel like they eat resources — because they do.

Farm Duplicates Before You Touch a Single Mote

If the item drops from a farmable mob, don't use Motes on it. Farm the duplicate instead. Duplicates merge to push rank, and they cost zero inventory value elsewhere.

Save Motes for items you can't farm:

  • Long quest-chain rewards
  • Sky quest weapons
  • Rare named-boss drops with low drop rate
  • Best-in-slot raid pieces
  • Anything like a Fiery Avenger where duplicating is unrealistic

If replacing the item takes hours, Motes are justified. If it's a common drop, farm it.

Mote Conversion: Fine for Spells, A Trap for Items

Most towns have a vendor that turns two lower Motes into one higher Mote. For spells, this is neutral — the doubling math holds up. For items, converting destroys value.

Before Total Item XP After Conversion New Item XP Value Lost
Two Rank 5 10 One Rank 6 64
Two Rank 6 12 One Rank 7 75
Two Rank 7 14 One Rank 8 86

Only convert when you're blocked — meaning your item needs an exact rank and you don't have it. Never convert just to clean up your bags. Keep a reserve of 5–10 of each rank so you're not forced into a bad conversion later.

Void Gems: Late-Rank Finishers, Not Early Boosts

You can earn up to three Void Gems per week by clearing three separate eligible raid bosses (Cazic-Thule, Lady Vox, Lord Nagafen, Master Yael, or similar rotating targets).

Each Void Gem pushes an item or spell up one rank, regardless of cost. That's massive at high ranks where normal Mote requirements get brutal.

Best use case:

Starting Rank Void Gem Result
7 1st 8
8 2nd 9
9 3rd 10

Get the item to Rank 7 on your own, then let Void Gems finish the last stretch. Use them earlier only if you're desperate or the item/spell is truly build-defining.

Prioritize items over spells for Void Gems — item upgrades are the expensive, rank-locked side of the system. Spells can still climb efficiently with regular Motes.

The Playbook

1. Dump low-rank Motes (1–3) into your core spells. Main damage spell, main heal, main CC — pick what defines your build.

2. Never spend Rank 5+ Motes without a target. These are reserved for item tier eligibility.

3. Farm duplicates for any farmable item. Rings, belts, named-mob drops — don't touch Motes here.

4. Save Motes for rare/quest items that can't be reasonably duplicated.

5. Hold Void Gems until Rank 7+. Use three per week to finish a Rank 7 item at Rank 10.

Rank Range Method
0–4 Duplicates or low Motes
4–7 Eligible Motes, conversion only if blocked
7–10 Void Gems preferred

Mistakes That Cost You Motes

Mistake Result Fix
High-rank Mote on a minor spell Burns resources needed for items Use low-rank Motes on spells
Converting everything upward Loses item XP silently Keep a reserve per rank
Motes on farmable gear Wastes flexible resources Farm duplicates instead
Assuming Tier 5 = Rank 5 Mote Upgrade fails Use Rank 6 for Tier 5
Void Gem at Rank 4–5 Skips a cheap rank Save for Rank 7+
Upgrading every spell equally Resources spread too thin Focus build-defining spells only

FAQ

Why won't my Rank 5 Mote upgrade my Tier 5 item?

Tiers and ranks are offset by one. A Tier 5 item needs a Rank 6 Mote. This mismatch is the single most common Mote mistake in the game.

Should I convert lower Motes into higher ones?

Only when you're stuck and need an exact rank. Conversion is neutral for spells but loses real item XP — two Rank 5 Motes give more total item value than one converted Rank 6.

Are Void Gems better spent on spells or items?

Items, almost always. Item upgrades are rank-locked and expensive; spell XP scales efficiently on its own. Save Void Gems for pushing gear from Rank 7 to Rank 10.

Should I use Motes on items that drop from farmable mobs?

No. Farm duplicates instead — they're free value that doesn't cost you flexible Mote resources. Save Motes for items you can't reliably reacquire.

What's the safest early strategy for new players?

Burn low-rank Motes on your main spell. Farm duplicates for common gear. Stockpile Rank 5+ Motes. Don't touch Void Gems until something hits Rank 7.

Summary

Spells treat Motes as XP — cheap ranks work just fine. Items treat Motes as keys — you need the exact rank, and the payoff per Mote is small. Farm duplicates whenever possible, hoard your Rank 5+ Motes for items that actually matter, and save Void Gems for finishing Rank 7+ upgrades. Get this order wrong once, and you'll be farming replacement Motes for weeks.
