AION 2 Pet Guide: Souls, Genus Insight, Owned Effects and What to Farm First

Your active mount is the least important part of the AION 2 pet system. Permanent stats come from two separate progression layers—pet souls for individual species and Soul Crystals + Kina for whole pet families through Genus Insight—and mixing them up is how players burn a week's Kina on nothing [2].

Similar names, non-interchangeable materials. Open the pet card or family screen before you spend anything [2].
| Resource | What It Levels | Regional Cap | What You Get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pet souls | One species entry | Level 3 per pet | That pet's Owned Effect (attack, HP, crit, accuracy, evasion, resistance) |
| Soul Crystals + Kina | A pet family via Genus Insight | Level 10 per family | Family XP plus randomly rolled stat lines in open slots |
Owned Effects stay active regardless of which pet you're riding. Ride whatever you like; power comes from the entries you've developed, not the one beside you.

How to Get a Pet
1. Open Pets, select an incomplete entry, and read its source—region, dungeon, named enemy, event, or reward chest.
2. Check the next-level Owned Effect on the card, not just the current one. Requirements jump unevenly between levels.
3. Farm the exact species listed. Visually similar variants in a neighboring zone drop souls for a different entry.
4. Confirm the counter ticks after your first drop. If it doesn't, stop and re-read the source panel.
Daily dungeon rewards and collection milestones also hand out progression materials—claim milestones before you leave the menu, since they're easy to forget .
Spend Order: What to Farm First
| Situation | Do This | Skip When |
|---|---|---|
| Species spawns on your daily quest or dungeon route | Level it as background progress | Its effect doesn't touch your build |
| Next pet level costs a small increase for a useful stat | Continue | The requirement spikes for a minor gain |
| You've stockpiled Soul Crystals | Pick one family and build its level first | You haven't decided which family fits your build |
| Genus roll gives an acceptable but not great line | Keep rolling unlocked | The line is strong enough to justify higher future lock costs |
| You run alts on the same server | Farm on one character only | Your region hasn't confirmed server-wide sharing |
Breadth beats depth early: several cheap species levels usually outperform one maxed pet. Reserve targeted cross-map farming for a level that unlocks a stat you actually need.
Genus Insight: The Lock Trap
Analysis consumes Soul Crystals and Kina, adds family XP, and rolls stats into open slots. Higher family levels open more slots. You can lock a line you want to keep, but every lock raises the cost of subsequent rolls.
The common mistake: locking the first decent line out of caution. Build family level first while rolls are cheap, then lock only a line strong enough to justify paying more for every future attempt. If you use auto-analysis, set the target outcome precisely—it consumes the displayed cost on every roll regardless of result.
Set a stopping rule before you open the panel: a family level target, one stat line worth keeping, a Kina floor you won't spend below, or a maximum attempt count. Stop at whichever hits first.

Server-Wide Sharing and Alts
The regional January 2026 update made pet ownership and Genus Insight apply across characters on the same server. Pet levels aggregate; Genus Insight uses the highest value any character reached. If your region has the same rule, duplicating pet farming on alts is wasted time. If it doesn't, pick the character that owns the investment before spending Soul Crystals.
Common Failures and Fixes
| Failure | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Souls drop but the counter doesn't move | Wrong species variant | Re-open the source panel; match the exact name |
| Soul Crystals won't feed a pet entry | Wrong currency—those are for families | Open the Genus Insight screen instead |
| Genus rolls cost more each time | Active locks | Unlock, or accept the current line and stop |
| Kina drained with nothing to show | No stopping rule | Set a floor and attempt cap before rolling |
| Switching mounts seems to lose stats | Confusing active pet with collection totals | Check All Owned Effects; totals persist |
| Old guide numbers don't match your client | Requirement changes since Season 3 | Trust the in-client gauge |

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Do Owned Effects work if the pet isn't equipped?
Yes. Owned Effects come from your collection entries, not your active mount. Verify the running total in All Owned Effects after switching .
What's the difference between pet souls and Soul Crystals?
Pet souls level one species (regional cap level 3). Soul Crystals with Kina level a pet family through Genus Insight (regional cap level 10) and roll stat lines.
Should I lock a good Genus Insight roll immediately?
No. Locks raise the cost of every later roll. Level the family first while attempts are cheap, then lock only a line worth that ongoing premium.
Should alts farm pets too?
In regional builds, no—pet levels and Genus Insight share across same-server characters since January 2026. Confirm your region's rule before duplicating effort
How many souls does a pet need?
Whatever your client's gauge shows. Requirements were adjusted in Season 3 and differ between regions, so third-party totals go stale quickly.
