ARK Survival Ascended Best Modded Creatures You Can Actually Tame Easily

Modded creatures are why you keep coming back to ARK: Survival Ascended. Instead of the usual knockout-and-feed loop, these five tames use custom triggers — bait, weapon displays, controlled combat, even a simple pickup.

Easy doesn't mean safe. Some of these live in brutal biomes. Some punish you for one bad hit. Prep matters more than skill here.

ARK Survival Ascended Best Modded Creatures You Can Actually Tame Easily

Here's what you need for each one: location, method, failure points, and payoff.

Quick Comparison

RankCreatureModTaming StyleMain RiskBest Use
5 Nanukosaurus Senor Pickles Combat challenge Overkilling it / Arctic threats Frost combat mount
4 Zungaritherium Tristan's Modding & DarkEdgeTV Cannonball KO Corpse-healing during fight Tank / platform saddle
3 Meganeura Zifius Honey bait + Rare Flower Swamp creatures joining the aggro Stealth exploration
2 Bomb Beetle Snapping Weapon display Missing its attention window Early flyer + resources
1 Charnia Zephyrus Pick-up tame Ocean predators nearby Water speed buff

Pattern: the easier tames all have one thing in common — predictable triggers. Learn the trigger, repeat it, done.

5. Nanukosaurus: Controlled Damage, Not Overkill

Found in Arctic biomes. The mechanic is simple. The environment is not.

Setup:

PrepBring
Armor Fur or cold-resistant gear
Mount Tanky combat mount
ItemTyrant Crown
Supplies Healing items, backup armor

How to tame:

1. Equip Tyrant Crown to trigger the challenge.

2. Let it fixate on your mount.

3. Let it hit your mount and stack frost.

4. Damage it — carefully.

5. Stop attacking once it's low.

6. Let it shatter stacks and heal.

7. Repeat until affinity fills.

Why it works: taming progress comes from the frost-heal cycle, not from killing it. Manage its health — don't burn it down.

Warning: one extra hit at low HP kills the tame. If it's dropping fast, stop immediately.

Payoff: upgradeable frost stacks, shatter damage, tail range, frost shield, and eventual fire resistance/immunity. One of the deepest mounts on this list.

4. Zungaritherium: Cannon Tame Without the Headshot Stress

Big, tanky, torpor-resistant. Unlike most cannon tames, body shots work — no headshot precision needed.

TypeTypical DifficultyZungaritherium
Rock Golem-style Headshot required Any body shot works
Fast targets Easy to miss Large hitbox
High-risk KOs Costly mistakes Forgiving torpor

How to tame:

1. Set up a cannon in a safe spot.

2. Lure it into range.

3. Fire at the body.

4. Knock it out, then feed Superior Kibble.

Field tip: it can harvest and heal from nearby corpses. Clear dead bodies from the area first or the tame drags on forever.

Payoff: tanky, bleed-resistant, veggie cake compatible. Saddle options:

SaddleEffect
Weight-reduction -50% carry weight — resource runs
Armor Better survivability
Platform Mobile base / cannon setups

3. Meganeura: Stop Chasing It

Small, fast, swamp-dwelling. Don't chase — bait it to you.

PrepWhy
Honey Required for the tame trigger
Rare Flower Aggros nearby creatures
Armor Swamp threats hit hard

How to tame:

1. Put Honey in your last hotbar slot.

2. Get close.

3. Eat a Rare Flower.

4. Let it aggro and attack you — it consumes the honey and tames instantly.

5. More Meganeura swarming? Reload honey fast.

Why it works: Rare Flowers flip its flee instinct into aggression. It comes to you instead.

Warning: Rare Flowers aggro everything nearby, not just Meganeura. Scout the area first, or bring a mount to escape a sudden swarm.

Payoff: a shrink-saddle that lets you sneak past big creatures, squeeze into tight spaces, and explore low-threat.

2. Bomb Beetle: Tame It With a Gun Show

Ground-dwelling flyer, mostly peaceful — safer than almost any other early flying option.

How to tame:

1. Approach slowly.

2. Equip a weapon (crossbow, rifle, whatever).

3. Get its attention.

4. Fire into the air.

5. Wait for a happy reaction.

6. Repeat when it looks at you again.

Mistake to avoid: spamming shots from too far away does nothing. It needs to see and react to each shot. Reposition and wait if it stops responding.

Variants and what they produce:

VariantResourceUse
Bombardier Beetle Gunpowder Ammo/explosives
Blister Beetle Congealed Gas Balls Advanced crafting
Blaze Beetle Propellant Scorched-tier crafting

Payoff: early flight + passive resource farming. Great fresh-server pick.

1. Charnia: You Just Pick It Up

No trap. No torpor. No bait. You literally pick it up.

TraitWhy It's Easy
Immobile Can't flee
Bright/glowing Easy to spot underwater
Shallow-water spawn Accessible early
Pick-up mechanic Zero resources needed

How to tame:

1. Swim to it.

2. Pick it up.

3. Place it wherever.

Done. That's the whole tame.

Payoff: water speed buff for you and allies. Great near ocean pens, underwater bases, or aquatic taming spots. Also doubles as decoration.

Only real risk: whatever's swimming near it. Charnia itself is zero threat.

Recommended Taming Order for New Players

OrderCreatureWhy
1 Charnia Zero risk, zero resources
2 Bomb Beetle Early mobility + resources
3 Meganeura Needs some swamp survivability
4 Zungaritherium Needs cannon setup
5 Nanukosaurus Needs strong mounts + cold gear

Pre-Tame Checklist

QuestionIf YesIf No
Know the biome? Bring specific gear Scout from the air first
Needs a hotbar item? Set it before approaching Fix hotbar before engaging
Can other creatures interrupt? Clear the area Relocate the target
Does it heal mid-tame? Control corpses/damage Avoid messy fight zones
Can you accidentally kill it? Attack in controlled bursts Bring weaker weapons

FAQ

What's the easiest modded creature to tame in ARK: Survival Ascended?

Charnia. Pick it up, place it down. No food, no fight, no knockout. The only danger is the ocean around it.

Which creature is best for early-game players?

Bomb Beetle. Simple weapon display, early flight, and passive resource income depending on the variant you find.

Is Nanukosaurus beginner-friendly?

No. The mechanic is easy to understand but easy to mess up. Arctic biome plus combat-based taming punishes careless damage. Bring a tanky mount and hold back on damage.

Why does Zungaritherium need cannonballs instead of tranq arrows?

It resists standard torpor. Cannonballs are mandatory — but unlike most cannon tames, any body shot counts, not just headshots.

How do you tame Meganeura without chasing it across the swamp?

Load Honey into your last hotbar slot, eat a Rare Flower, and let it aggro onto you. It attacks, eats the honey, tames instantly. The flower does the chasing for you.

Bottom Line

Charnia wins on pure simplicity. Bomb Beetle wins on early value. Meganeura rewards smart baiting. Zungaritherium makes cannon taming less painful. Nanukosaurus is the real test of combat control.

Every one of these tames comes down to one thing: find the trigger, respect the risk, repeat the process. Crown, cannonball, honey slot, weapon display, or pickup — get the mechanic right and the rest takes care of itself.
