Helldivers 2 Weapon Customization Guide: Everything You Need to Know

Are you looking to level up your weaponry? With the release of Helldivers 2, players now have the opportunity to customize and improve their combat loadout, including sharpening your primary weapons to your desired specifications. There is lots to discover, ranging from optics and magazines to camos, underbarrel attachments, and even more.

This guide focuses on all the relevant information on how to unlock upgrades and refine your weapons for the best balance between power and efficiency.

How to Unlock?

To unlock further customization options for specific weapons, you will need to level them up.

  • Bring Your Weapon Into Missions: The primary weapon you use gains experience after each operation.
  • Complete Objectives: Higher difficulty levels and more completed objectives mean faster weapon leveling.
  • Focus On Specific Missions: Blitz Missions & Eradication Missions.

Currently, all weapons can be leveled to 25, with each level requiring progressively more experience than the last.

Stats

After a weapon has been leveled, players can go to the armory to select the "Customize" option. Here, a full breakdown of stats affecting a weapon's performance is available.

Stat Description
Horizontal Recoil Measures side-to-side movement during sustained fire. High values = harder control.
Vertical Recoil Dictates upward kickback during firing. Easier to manage than horizontal recoil.
Sway Affects reticle deviation while moving and shooting. All primary weapons have a fixed value of 2.
Ergonomics Determines how quickly your reticle follows your aim. Higher values = faster target acquisition.
Capacity Refers to magazine size and spare ammo count. Larger mags = slower reloads.

New Recoil Simulation

One of the most exciting features of the customization system is the recoil simulation tool. This visual aid shows the spread pattern of your weapon during sustained fire without any recoil control.

  • Tighter Spread: Indicates better accuracy and control.
  • Wider Spread: Suggests higher recoil and more difficulty staying on target.

Use this tool to experiment with attachments and find the setup that feels best for your playstyle.

 Customization Options

Next, We will look into almost every customization facets available, such as optics, underbarrel attachments, muzzle devices, and magazines so you can fully dominate the battlefield. These options may be limited at first, but there is still enough variety to strategize and optimize your weapons for different combat scenarios.

Optics

Optics customization affects your weapon's ergonomics and target acquisition. The specific options are listed in the table below.

Optic Type Benefits Drawbacks
Iron Sights Best ergonomics and fastest target acquisition. Limited zoom and precision.
Red Dots/Reflex Balanced option for ergonomics and zoom. Moderate improvements only.
Larger Scopes Higher zoom for long-range precision. Reduces ergonomics and swivel speed.

For close-quarters combat, iron sights or red dots are ideal. For long-range engagements, larger scopes are the way to go.

Underbarrel Attachments

Underbarrel options impact recoil control and ergonomics. You can Choose based on your weapon's fire rate and playstyle.

Attachment Type Benefits Drawbacks
No Underbarrel Best ergonomics. Worst recoil control.
Vertical Foregrip Drastically reduces vertical recoil. Decreases ergonomics.
Angled Foregrip Improves ergonomics. Increases vertical recoil.
Laser/Flashlight Combo Adds utility (visibility/targeting aid). Slight ergonomics penalty.

Note:

  • Automatic weapons: Use vertical foregrips for better recoil control.
  • Semi-automatic weapons: Angled foregrips are ideal due to minimal recoil concerns.

Muzzle Attachments

Muzzle attachments influence recoil and spread patterns.

Muzzle Type Benefits Drawbacks
No Muzzle Best ergonomics. No recoil reduction.
Muzzle Brake Substantially reduces horizontal recoil. Decreases ergonomics.
Compensator Greatly reduces vertical recoil. Slight ergonomics penalty.
Flash Hider Reduces both horizontal and vertical recoil slightly; minimizes muzzle flash. Moderate ergonomics penalty.

Notes:

  • Slow-firing semi-automatic or bolt-action weapons: Skip the muzzle attachment for better ergonomics.
  • Automatic weapons (e.g., SMGs): Use muzzle brakes for horizontal recoil control.
  • Shotguns: Focus on choke options instead of traditional muzzle attachments to adjust spread patterns.

Magazines

Magazine customization balances capacity, reload speed, and ergonomics. You can choose based on your ammo needs.

Magazine Type Benefits Drawbacks
Short Magazine Faster reloads, better ergonomics, more spare mags. Lower ammo capacity per reload.
Extended Magazine Increased capacity (50% more than short). Standard reload speed, fewer spare mags.
Drum Magazine Maximum capacity (100% more than short). Slower reloads, fewer spare mags, ergonomics penalty.

In a horde shooter like Helldivers 2, more ammo is usually better. Opt for extended or drum magazines when a
