↖ ARK Level 20 Priority: Why This Unlock Matters
Do not rush into the mountains with stone tools if you can avoid it. Hit Level 20 first. The trip becomes safer, faster, and more profitable.
| Unlock | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Refining Forge | Turns raw Metal into Ingots |
| Smithy | Crafts Metal tools and Crossbows |
| Metal Pick | Better Metal, Crystal, and Oil yield |
| Metal Hatchet | Higher durability, better harvesting |
| Spyglass path | Lets you check creature levels safely |
| Tranq Arrows at Level 21 | Opens proper knockout taming |
Best early XP method: craft Narcotics.
Narcotics are never wasted. They give XP now and become Tranq Arrows later.
| Craft | Use |
|---|---|
| Narcotic | XP + taming |
| Tranq Arrow | Knockout tames |
| Crossbow | Better torpor and damage than Bow |
If you are stuck at Level 17–19, farm berries, spoil meat, and craft Narcotics until Level 20.
↖ First Metal: Use River Rocks Before Mountains
Your first Metal should come from river rocks. These are the smooth, round rocks along beaches and riverbanks.
They are not rich nodes. They are safe nodes. That matters early.
| Source | Yield | Risk | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| River rocks | Low-medium | Low | First Forge and Smithy |
| Regular rocks | Very low | Low | Emergency only |
| Mountain Metal nodes | High | Medium-high | Main Metal farming |
| Rich Metal nodes | Very high | High | Later farming |
Raw Metal smelts at 2 raw Metal = 1 Metal Ingot.
| Need | Raw Metal Required |
|---|---|
| 5 Ingots for Smithy | 10 raw Metal |
| 1 Ingot for Metal Pick | 2 raw Metal |
| 10 Ingots | 20 raw Metal |
First priority after the Forge: craft the Smithy, then craft a Metal Pick.
The Metal Pick pays for itself immediately. It gathers more Metal from river rocks, mountain nodes, Crystal, and early Oil sources.
↖ Forge, Smithy, and Metal Tool Crafting Order
Do not waste your first Ingots. Craft in this order.
| Priority | Craft | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Refining Forge | Smelts Metal |
| 2 | Smithy | Unlocks better gear |
| 3 | Metal Pick | Boosts resource yield |
| 4 | Metal Hatchet | Better utility and durability |
| 5 | Spyglass | Scout levels safely |
| 6 | Crossbow | Main early weapon and taming tool |
Use Wood as Forge fuel early. It gives Charcoal, which you need later for Gunpowder.
| Fuel | Works? | Makes Charcoal? |
|---|---|---|
| Wood | Yes | Yes |
| Sparkpowder | Yes | No |
| Thatch | No | No |
Sparkpowder is fine later. Early on, Charcoal has value.
↖ Safe Metal and Crystal Run Route
Once you have a Metal Pick, go for a mountain or high rocky area with Crystal and Metal nodes.
Bring only what you need. Weight kills more beginners than predators.
↖ Resource Run Loadout
| Item | Amount | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bolas | 3+ | Stops Raptors and small threats |
| Food | 20+ | No hunger panic |
| Metal Pick | 1 | Main farming tool |
| Hatchet | 1 | Utility and hide |
| Bow/Crossbow | 1–2 | Defense and taming |
| Arrows | 20+ | Basic defense |
| Mount | 1 | Carry weight and escape |
If you have a second tame with decent weight, bring it only if the path is safe. A weak pack mule can turn a clean run into babysitting.
↖ Crystal Farming: Get Enough, Drop the Stone
Crystal spawns on mountain tops, ridges, and rocky high ground. Use a Metal Pick.
First trip target: 20+ Crystal.
That covers:
| Use | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Spyglass | Check wild dino levels from range |
| Backup crafting | Saves another risky trip |
| Future progression | Water Jar, Fabricator path, Greenhouse later |
Drop extra Stone. Stone is easy near base. Metal and Crystal are not.
↖ Mountain Metal Farming: Watch the Weight Line
Raw Metal weighs 1.0 each. It gets heavy fast.
Do not push your mount past the weight line unless the path home is completely safe. Once the mount slows down, every Raptor, Carno, or Therizino becomes a real problem.
| Resource | Keep or Drop? | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Raw Metal | Keep | Main goal |
| Crystal | Keep 20+ | Important unlocks |
| Stone | Drop | Too heavy, low value |
| Hide / Chitin | Keep if light | Useful crafting |
| Oil | Keep | Valuable early |
A safe return with 200 Metal is better than dying with 500 Metal halfway down the hill.
↖ Threats to Avoid on Early Resource Runs
Do not fight everything. Route around bad spawns.
| Threat | Problem | Correct Play |
|---|---|---|
| Raptor | Fast early killer | Bola, kill, or flee |
| Carno | Too much damage early | Avoid |
| Spino | Bad news near rivers | Reroute instantly |
| Therizino | Looks passive, deletes you | Stay far away |
| Piranha | Punishes river crossings | Cross narrow water |
| Baryonyx | Water stun | Avoid swimming near it |
| Megalodon | Ocean threat | Stay shallow |
If a Spino is near the crossing, find another crossing. Do not test it. ARK already knows the answer.
↖ Explorer Notes: Free XP During the Run
Grab Explorer Notes when safe, preferably while mounted.
They give:
- Instant XP
- Temporary XP boost
- Faster early progression
Best use: collect a note, return home, then craft Narcotics, tools, structures, or Tranq Arrows during the XP buff.
Do not overdo note rushing if you want a natural beginner pace. But if one is on your route, take it.
↖ Early Oil: Shallow Water Only
You can get early Oil from dark/purple underwater nodes or coral-like deposits near shallow coastlines. Use a Metal Pick.
Target: 10–20 Oil. That is enough for early needs.
| Rule | Reason |
|---|---|
| Stay close to shore | Easier escape |
| Watch oxygen | Drowning is common early |
| Watch stamina | Swimming drains it |
| Avoid Megalodons | Not worth the risk |
| Use Metal Pick | Better yield |
Do not dive deep for Oil this early. Shallow Oil is a bonus, not the main mission.
↖ Crossbow, Tranq Arrows, and Spyglass Upgrade
After the resource run, smelt your Metal and upgrade.
At Level 21, learn Tranq Arrows.
At Level 25, craft Crossbows.
| Weapon | Best Use | Downside |
|---|---|---|
| Bow | Cheap backup | Lower damage and torpor |
| Crossbow | Main early taming weapon | Repairs at Smithy |
| High-quality Bow | Use if damage is higher | Depends on loot |
Best hotbar setup:
| Slot | Weapon | Ammo |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Crossbow | Regular Arrows |
| 2 | Crossbow | Tranq Arrows |
This saves lives. One weapon for killing. One for taming. No inventory panic.
Craft a Spyglass as soon as you have Crystal. It lets you check levels before wasting Tranq Arrows on bad tames.
↖ Tames of Opportunity
Watch for easy tames while traveling. A lucky tame can carry the early game.
| Tame | Value |
|---|---|
| Parasaur | Weight, detection, basic transport |
| Trike | Berries and early defense |
| Carbonemys | Tanky bodyguard |
| Dodo | Eggs and early kibble path |
| Pteranodon | Future flyer |
| Raptor | Fast combat mount |
If a useful tame is stuck in rocks or trees, take the free win.

↖ FAQ
↖ What level should we be before farming Metal and Crystal?
Aim for Level 20. That unlocks Refining Forge, Smithy, Metal Pick, and Metal Hatchet. You can grab small Metal from river rocks earlier, but Level 20 makes the real run worth it.
↖ What is the safest early Metal source in ARK?
River rocks. Look for smooth round rocks near beaches and rivers. They give enough Metal for your first Forge and Smithy without forcing a mountain trip.
↖ Why craft the Metal Pick first?
The Metal Pick improves Metal, Crystal, and Oil gathering. It is the best first use of Ingots because it makes every next resource run better.
↖ How much Crystal should we get early?
Get 20+ Crystal on the first safe trip. That gives you a Spyglass and enough backup Crystal for early progression.
↖ Is Crossbow better than Bow for taming?
Yes, most of the time. The Crossbow applies more torpor with Tranq Arrows and hits harder. Keep a second Crossbow with regular arrows for defense.
↖ Summary
The clean early ARK progression route is:
Level 20 ➔ Forge ➔ Smithy ➔ Metal Pick ➔ Crystal and Metal run ➔ Spyglass ➔ Tranq Arrows ➔ Crossbow ➔ early Oil.
Keep it tight:
- Use river rocks for first Metal.
- Craft Metal Pick before the mountain run.
- Bring 3+ Bolas.
- Farm 20+ Crystal.
- Drop Stone.
- Watch mount weight.
- Avoid Spinos, Therizinos, Baryonyx, and Megalodons.
- Get 10–20 Oil only from safe shallow water.
Once this loop is done, early survival turns into real progression. You can scout better tames, knock them out faster, defend yourself properly, and stop crawling through the game with stone tools.
