ARK: Survival Ascended Dung Beetle Taming Guide: Locations, Food & Auto-Farm Setup

Dung Beetles look like a joke tame. They're not. Get one set up right and it grinds out Fertilizer and Oil on autopilot while you do literally anything else. This guide skips the lore and gives you the exact locations, food, and setup that work.

ARK: Survival Ascended Dung Beetle Taming Guide: Locations, Food & Auto-Farm Setup

What They Actually Do

Passive tame. No combat, no riding, no defense. Just feces-to-resource conversion.

FeatureDetails
Diet Feces (Spoiled Meat works in a pinch)
Output Fertilizer + Oil
Best StatWeight — nothing else matters
Best Setup Wander + enclosure

Key point: you're not taming this for stats. You're taming it to delete a chore.

Where to Find Them

The Island — Volcano Cave (40.2, 46.4)

Best beginner spot. You don't need to go deep — beetles show up early in the cave route.

Threats: Onyx swarms, Araneo (slow debuff), Arthropluera (armor shred), Titanoboa (torpor).

Valguero — Wyvern Trench (8.2, 75.8 / 10.1, 74.1)

Higher risk. Lava, Wyverns, Pyromanes, insects.

Warning: beetles near lava sometimes wander in mid-tame. Watch its pathing before you commit.

Prep Before You Go In

BringWhy
Large Animal Feces Fastest taming food
Bug Repellent Cave insects notice you slower
Shotgun / Pike Clear enemies without risking melee aggro
Cave tame (Baryonyx, Megatherium, Direwolf) Clears threats fast
Cryopod Extraction — don't escort a beetle through a cave on foot

If your server allows cryopods, bring one. Non-negotiable. This thing is slow and fragile — it will not survive an escort mission.

Best Food Ranking

FoodSpeed
Large Animal Feces Best — fewest feeds needed
Medium Feces Decent
Small / Human Feces Slow but works
Spoiled Meat Backup / post-tame feeding

Large feces cuts your cave exposure time. Less standing around near spiders.

Taming Steps

1. Load feces into your last hotbar slot. Passive tames read this slot specifically.

2. Clear the area first. Kill Araneo, Onyx, Titanoboa before approaching.

3. Walk up slow. Wait for the feed prompt.

4. Feed it. Next prompt takes a bit — that's normal, don't panic-feed.

5. Don't hit it. Ever. Aggro ruins the run.

6. Repeat until tamed.

7. Cryopod immediately.

If it aggros: leave render range, wait, come back. It resets. Don't fight it.

Mistakes That Kill the Run

MistakeFix
No feces on hand Pack it before entering
Shooting near the beetle Clear from a wider angle
Ignoring cave mobs Clear first, tame second
Taming next to lava Reposition or wait
No cryopod Bring one — always

Funny enough, a beetle stuck in a corner is a gift. It can't wander off mid-feed. Just make sure the corner isn't next to a spider nest.

Base Setup — Making It Actually Work

1. Place near your animal pens.

2. Enable Feces Collection.

3. Set to Wander.

4. Trap it in a cage or small enclosure.

5. Every level → Weight. No exceptions.

Why the cage matters: wander is required for auto-collection, but wander also means it'll casually walk out of your base if you let it. Cage solves both problems at once.

StatLevel It?
WeightYes, always
Health Optional
Melee / Stamina / Speed Skip — waste of points

More weight = more feces held = longer runtime before you need to empty it.

Why Bother Early

Fertilizer keeps crop plots running, which feeds your kibble chain. Manual farming without it is miserable.

Oil early-game is a pain — snow biomes, deep water, specific rocks. A beetle gives you a small, safe trickle of Oil from stuff you were throwing away anyway.

ResourcePayoff
Fertilizer Steady crop support, zero upkeep
Oil Early crafting without a dangerous Oil run
Time Zero manual feces collection

Fastest Workflow

1. Stock Large Animal Feces before leaving base.

2. Clear an easy cave with a strong tame.

3. Passive tame from a safe angle.

4. Cryopod out immediately.

5. Drop near pens, enable collection, set wander, cage it.

6. Level Weight only.

FAQ

What's the best food for taming a Dung Beetle?

Large Animal Feces. Medium/Small/Human feces work but take longer.

Is it a knockout tame?

No — it's passive. Feed it directly with feces in your last hotbar slot.

Where's the easiest Dung Beetle spot on The Island?

Volcano Cave, around 40.2, 46.4. You don't need to go deep to find one, but the cave stays dangerous throughout.

Why enable wander?

It's required for auto feces collection. Cage it or it'll wander off.

Why level Weight over everything else?

More weight = more feces carried = longer between empties. Combat stats do nothing for a passive utility tame.

Bottom Line

Dung Beetles are the definition of boring but essential. Tame one early, cage it near your pens with wander + feces collection enabled, dump every level into Weight, and forget about it — it'll keep quietly producing Fertilizer and Oil while you focus on things that actually try to kill you.
