ARK Survival Ascended Magmasaur Guide: Egg Theft, Raising, and Metal Farming Tips

You don't tame a Magmasaur. You steal its egg, run for your life, hatch it in an oven-hot incubator, and raise a creature that swims lava, smelts metal on the move, and lobs fireballs at turrets.

ARK Survival Ascended Magmasaur Guide: Egg Theft, Raising, and Metal Farming Tips

This is the no-fluff version: where to find eggs, how to hatch them without cooking yourself, what to feed babies, and how to build one for farming or PvP.

Where to Find Magmasaur Eggs

Nests sit in volcanic caves and lava chambers. No knockout taming — you grab the egg and run.

Map Location Notes
Genesis: Part 1 Volcano biome cave chambers Best-known egg spot
Lost Island Volcanic caves Solid backup
Fjordur Volcanic zones Easier to scout safely
Ragnarok Not native Needs mods/custom spawns

Genesis reference points: volcanic cave entrances near lat 29.1, lon 91.5, or broader biome routes around 50, 90. Treat these as starting points, not guaranteed markers — spawns shift.

Egg-Stealing Prep

The cave kills you faster than the Magmasaur does. Heat, lava, narrow paths, angry adults — all at once.

Bring this:

  • Grappling hook — vertical escape
  • Parachute/glider suit — controlled falls
  • Medical brews — heat and damage buffer
  • Cryopod or fast mount — get out immediately
  • Bloodstalker/Pyromane — hit-and-run cave mobility

Do this, in order:

1. Scout the nest and exit path first

2. Skip fights you don't need

3. Grab the highest-level egg available

4. Leave immediately — parents chase hard

If the cave's packed with adults and the egg's low-level, walk away. Not worth dying for a weak egg.

Hatching: Nail the Temperature

Magmasaur eggs need 90–110°C (194–230°F). Skip the guesswork.

Use an Egg Incubator, set to 100°C / 212°F. Done.

Torches and AC units technically work but you'll be babysitting temperature swings the whole time. Not worth it.

Before the egg hatches:

  • Food stockpiled (see below)
  • Safe, enclosed hatching spot
  • You're staying put for imprints

Feeding Babies: This Is Where People Fail

Magmasaur babies don't eat meat. They eat sulfur or ambergris.

This is the #1 reason people lose their hatch — egg survives the cave, baby starves at home because nobody farmed sulfur first.

Stage Food Note
Baby Sulfur/ambergris Stock up before hatching
Juvenile Sulfur/ambergris Food drains fast — watch it
Adolescent Sulfur/ambergris Gets easier as stat improves
Adult Standard Check your server rates

Farm the food before incubation finishes. Not after. Babies starve on a clock you don't control.

Stat Priorities

Different builds need different stats. Don't level blind.

Stat Priority Why
WeightVery High (farming) Metal/stone runs die without it
Health High Cave threats, turret fire, predators
Stamina High Charged attacks + sustained travel
Melee Medium-High Damage and harvest power
Movement Speed Low Server-dependent, rarely worth it
Oxygen/Food Skip Waste of points

Farming build: Weight → Stamina → Melee

PvP build: Health → Stamina → Melee + best saddle

All-rounder: Health → Weight → Stamina

A high-melee Magmasaur that can't carry its own harvest is a liability, not an asset.

Abilities That Matter

Ability Function Use
Melee swing Harvests + basic combat Metal, stone, obsidian
Fireball (charged) Ranged fire burst Turret pressure, structure damage
Internal smelting Converts metal → ingots in-inventory Long farm runs
Lava immunity Full lava movement Volcanic travel, cave access

The fireball trade-off: charging slows you down. Charge in the open, you're a glowing target. Charge from cover, you're a problem for the enemy.

Metal Farming: The Real Selling Point

The Magmasaur gathers metal, stone, and obsidian while smelting metal into ingots as it walks.

Resource Performance
Metal Excellent
Stone Excellent
Obsidian Good
Wood/Thatch Moderate
Meat/Hide Acceptable

Weight reduction hits hardest on metal and ingots — that's the whole reason long farming loops work.

Versus Anky: an optimized Anky-plus-skiff setup out-farms it in a controlled system. But solo or small tribe? The Magmasaur farms, carries, survives lava, and smelts — no support crew needed.

Reality check on smelting: it's not instant. It's bonus efficiency on long runs (10-20+ minutes). Quick trips barely notice the smelting benefit.

PvP: Turret Pressure Machine

The charged fireball is the headline feature here.

Target Effectiveness
Auto turrets Very High
Heavy turrets High
Tek turrets Moderate
Stone structures High
Metal structures Moderate-High

Position or die. Walk into turret range mid-charge and you get shredded. Use cover, soakers, or terrain angles — the fireball becomes a real siege tool instead of a suicide attack.

Not for: Gigas, Carchas, boss fights. Durable ≠ invincible.

Mistakes That Kill Your Magmasaur

Mistake Fix
No scouting before grabbing egg Scout nest + exit first
No food stocked pre-hatch Farm sulfur/ambergris early
Melee-only leveling Balance weight + stamina
Charging fireballs in open Use cover, time it right
Treating smelting as instant Run longer farming loops
Fighting top predators Avoid Gigas/Carchas
Cheap saddle Upgrade blueprint quality

FAQ

How do you tame a Magmasaur in ARK: Survival Ascended?

No knockout, no passive feeding. Steal the egg, hatch it at high heat, raise the baby on sulfur or ambergris.

What temperature does a Magmasaur egg need?

90–110°C (194–230°F). Set your incubator to 100°C / 212°F and skip the guesswork.

What do baby Magmasaurs eat?

Sulfur or ambergris. Stock it before the egg hatches — babies starve fast without it.

Is the Magmasaur good for metal farming?

Yes. Strong metal gathering, weight reduction on metal/ingots, and internal smelting while you move.

Is the Magmasaur better than an Ankylosaurus?

For optimized tribe systems with skiffs, Anky wins. For solo/self-contained volcanic farming, Magmasaur wins — it farms, carries, survives lava, and smelts on its own.

Bottom Line

Build the incubator setup before you touch the cave. Farm sulfur before the egg hatches. Level weight and stamina first, melee second. That's the whole game with this creature — prep beats panic every time, and a Magmasaur that starves or gets ambushed on day one was never going to pay off anyway.
