Runescape Dragonwilds Ascension Guide: Core Recipes, Shard Drops and Upgrade Costs
Ascend eligible Masterwork weapons and Vestiges with Ascension Cores at the Mystic Forge. Confirm the item's eligibility and required core before farming: ordinary ore-tier weapons are not valid targets, and similarly named shards can serve different recipes.

Recipe and drop figures below come from the linked GamesLantern database, not independent playtesting. Your installed game's crafting menu takes precedence where availability differs.

How to Ascend Gear at the Mystic Forge
Start with the item, not the shards. If your weapon does not appear in Ascension Upgrades, collecting more materials will not make it eligible.
1. Open the Mystic Forge's Ascension Upgrades menu.
2. Select an eligible Masterwork weapon or Vestige.
3. Check its power level and required core.
4. Obtain and apply that core.
5. Inspect the resulting level before spending another.
The core number is the destination level. Core 5 upgrades level 4 to 5; Core 6 upgrades level 5 to 6.
There is an early-tier distinction: the Core 4 entry describes upgrading eligible gear from a lower power level to level 4, not exclusively from level 3. Check the forge rather than assuming every early item needs the same sequence.

Ascension Core Recipes and Costs
Each listed recipe uses 99 matching shards, plus three supporting materials. The table distinguishes database-listed recipes from confirmed in-game availability.
| Core | Shards | Bars | Leather | Cloth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 99 Ascension Shard 4 | 10 Iron Bars | 10 Dire Wolf Leather | 10 Padded Cloth |
| 5 | 99 Ascension Shard 5 | 10 Steel Bars | 10 Draconic Leather | 10 Fine Cloth |
| 6 | 99 Ascension Shard 6 | 10 Mithril Bars | 10 Cursed Leather | 10 Mystic Cloth |
| 7 | 99 Ascension Shard 7 | 10 Adamant Bars | 10 Scorch Leather | 10 Infinity Cloth |
| 8 | 99 Ascension Shard | 10 Rune Bars | 10 Black Dragon Leather | 10 Vis Cloth |
Stock the supporting materials before your final shard run; 99 shards alone cannot complete the recipe.
Sources: Core 4, Core 5, Core 6, Core 7, and Core 8.
Do not confuse the two late-game shards
Ascension Shard 7 belongs to the listed Core 7 recipe. The unnumbered Ascension Shard belongs to Core 8—even though its database page labels the material itself power level 7.
Use the recipe association, not the material's power label.
The Core 7 recipe page does not identify a crafting station. Its presence in the database therefore does not prove that you can currently craft it at the Mystic Forge.

Calculate the remaining cost
Under the listed recipes, upgrading a level-4 weapon to level 6 requires 198 shards: 99 tier-5 and 99 tier-6 shards. Supporting costs total 20 bars, 20 leather and 20 cloth, split between the two recipes.
We budget from the weapon's current level. Farming Core 4 materials for an item already at level 4 adds nothing to its next upgrade.
Shard Sources and Weapon Priorities
Farm the tier your next core needs. The database provides drop quantities, but it does not establish the fastest route once travel, respawns and combat time are included.
Listed shard drops
These figures show what a successful kill can yield according to the database.
| Core target | Enemy | Listed shards | Drop chance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | General Velgar | 30–40 | 100% |
| 4 | Abyssal Demon | 12–19 | 40% |
| 4 | Garou King | 6–12 | 50% |
| 5 | Green Dragon variants | 15–20 | 100% |
| 5 | Imaru | 30–40 | 100% |
| 6 | Blue Dragon | 15–20 | 100% |
| 6 | Black Knight Titan | 20–30 | 100% |
| 8 | Scorned Wilderness Green Dragon variants | 8–12 | 100% |
| 8 | Kuldra | 8–12 | 100% |
Prefer guaranteed matching-tier drops when building a predictable material budget; higher yield does not automatically mean a faster route.
Sources: tier-4 shards, tier-5 shards, tier-6 shards, and Core 8 shards.
For 99 shards from zero, the listed quantities imply:
- General Velgar: 3–4 kills.
- Green or Blue Dragons at 15–20 shards: 5–7 kills.
- Core 8 sources at 8–12 shards: 9–13 kills.
These are quantity calculations, not timed farming results. They exclude other rewards and assume the listed drops apply to your version.

Choose a weapon without trusting an unsupported ranking
Staff of Light is listed as a power-level-4 Masterwork weapon with a 4.5× damage multiplier. That is a multiplier—not 4.5 points of damage.
Its listed special effect is increased damage. This establishes eligibility and a useful comparison feature, not proof that it is the best fully ascended staff.
If you compare it with another weapon, use equal power levels, the same target and the same buffs. Include reload or casting downtime and special-action performance; starting-tier tooltips cannot settle the upgrade decision.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Which gear can ascend in Dragonwilds?
Eligible Masterwork weapons and Vestiges can ascend. Ordinary ore-tier weapons cannot; check that your item appears in the Mystic Forge's upgrade menu before gathering materials.
How many shards does an Ascension Core require?
Each listed core recipe requires 99 matching shards. It also needs 10 bars, 10 leather and 10 cloth of the specified types.
What is the best source of tier-5 Ascension Shards?
Green Dragons are a predictable option, with database-listed drops of 15–20 tier-5 shards at 100%. That means 5–7 kills for 99 shards from zero, but the fastest route depends on travel and respawn time.
Can you craft Ascension Core 7?
A Core 7 recipe exists in the database, but that does not confirm current player-accessible crafting. Check your game's recipe menu before collecting its 99 Ascension Shard 7 and supporting materials.
Does Dragonwilds support power-level-8 Ascension?
The database lists a core that upgrades eligible gear from level 7 to 8. Its recipe uses the unnumbered Ascension Shard, not Ascension Shard 7; confirm that exact ingredient before farming.
