Build the Zombie Axe, Dorgeshuun Crossbow, and Necromancer Staff when you reach their tier; keep them in contention for later upgrades. If you have one Ascension Core, spend it on the weapon you use most—not automatically on your newest unlock.

Best weapons by power level

Use this table as a crafting shortlist. The picks follow the supplied gameplay comparisons; patch-sensitive stats and upgrade requirements still need confirmation in the current game build.

Power levelMeleeRangedMagic
1 Stone Dagger — —
2 Goblin Swing Slash Adventurer's Longbow Ash Battle Staff
3 Skoll Splitter; Granite Maul for heavy hits Wild Scout Shortbow Oak Battle Staff
4 Abyssal Whip; Dragon Bone Dagger while farming it Bluerite Crossbow Staff of Light
5 Zombie Axe; Steel Greatsword for groups Dorgeshuun Crossbow Necromancer Staff
6 Mithril Sword; Black Greataxe for heavy hits Mithril Crossbow Subjugation Staff
7 Masterwork Abyssal Whip; Adamant Greatsword for groups Bow of Elidinis Obby Staff
8 Rune weapons or an upgraded favorite Rune Crossbow or an upgraded favorite Ancestral Staff or an upgraded favorite

Do not craft every entry. Level five offers the clearest set of weapons to keep using after their original unlock tier.

Early game: prioritize a hit you can finish

The Stone Dagger is enough to leave level one behind. At level two, use Goblin Swing Slash for melee, but account for its reduced durability; take the Adventurer's Longbow when your first shot on a deer matters more than rapid follow-ups.

At level three, the Skoll Splitter is the safer everyday melee choice. The Granite Maul hits hard only when you have time to complete its swing. If enemies interrupt you repeatedly, stop treating its damage number as damage you actually dealt.

Midgame: avoid farming bottlenecks

At level four, make the Dragon Bone Dagger if the Abyssal Whip's materials stall your progress. Use the Iron Greatsword against groups, then pursue the Staff of Light when its crafting requirements are within reach.

Level five changes the upgrade conversation. The Zombie Axe delivers direct melee damage; the Dorgeshuun Crossbow pairs bleed with bone bolts; the Necromancer Staff remains an upgrade candidate despite reduced durability. Do not plan around Amarok's Talon to beat Amarok: its acquisition comes too late to solve that fight.

Late game: read the restriction before crafting

The Black Greataxe is our level-six heavy-weapon pick, but its increased stamina cost punishes a missed swing. Save enough stamina to reposition. For ranged combat, the Mithril Crossbow is less dependent on repeated weak-point hits than the slower Shadow Crossbow.

At level seven, the Masterwork Abyssal Whip competes with the Obby Sword for everyday melee. The Bow of Elidinis brings water-focused utility, but its reported ammunition restrictions rule it out when you need poison, bleed, or fire arrows. Keep another ranged weapon for those fights.

Level-eight rune weapons are options, not compulsory replacements. Compare them with your upgraded level-five favorites in the encounters you actually repeat.

Which weapon deserves an Ascension Core?

An Ascension Core should improve your regular loadout. A weapon that wins only against one enemy type—or loses attacks to slow animations—may be a poor first investment.

StyleFirst choiceUse the alternative when…
One-handed Zombie AxeMasterwork Abyssal Whip: you prefer reach, fast attacks, and bleed.
Two-handed Black GreataxeGranite Maul: you can create safe openings for slow swings.
Ranged Dorgeshuun CrossbowBluerite Crossbow: you need access to different bolt types.
Magic Necromancer StaffStaff of Light: you prefer its handling or upkeep.

Our first-core pick is conditional: take the Zombie Axe for frequent melee fights, or the Dorgeshuun Crossbow if ranged combat carries your loadout. Do not upgrade an unfinished whip solely because you intend to obtain its masterwork version later.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

What is the best one-handed weapon in Dragonwilds?

The Zombie Axe is the strongest general-purpose pick in these comparisons. Use the Masterwork Abyssal Whip instead if its reach and faster attacks help you land more hits.

Is the Dorgeshuun Crossbow worth upgrading?

Yes, if you are comfortable using bone bolts exclusively. Keep a conventional crossbow when an encounter calls for other bolt effects.

Should we upgrade the Granite Maul or Black Greataxe?

Upgrade the Black Greataxe for routine combat. Choose the Granite Maul only if you can land its slower hits without frequent interruption.

Is the Bow of Elidinis better than a crossbow?

Not when you need poison, bleed, or fire ammunition. Use it for its water-focused utility and area attack; carry a crossbow for ammunition flexibility.

Do rune weapons replace upgraded older weapons?

No. If your upgraded favorite lands more attacks or serves a useful role that the rune weapon cannot, keep it equipped.
