Star Citizen 4.9 Free Cutlass Black Guides: The Recco Mission Loophole

Recco's new Star Citizen 4.9 boarding mission hands you a free flyable Cutlass Black. No purchase, no pledge store. We ran it multiple times to confirm what's real and what's just server luck.

Star Citizen 4.9 Free Cutlass Black Guides: The Recco Mission Loophole

The Setup: Boarded Caterpillar, Abandoned Cutlass

The mission target is a Drake Caterpillar, boarded by a hostile gang. Standard job: clear the ship, fix the power plant. But the gang's Cutlass sits unlocked right next to the wreck — engines cold, doors open, fully loot able.

That Cutlass is the real reward.

How to Claim It: 6 Steps

1. Accept Recco's mission. Repeatable, always in rotation.

2. Fly to the marked Caterpillar. Cutlass is parked beside it.

3. Skip the fight if you want. You don't need to clear the Caterpillar to loot the Cutlass — it's accessible immediately.

4. Loot the back. Chest with armor/weapons, plus 3 ship components in the racks.

5. Fly it home. Won't power on? Reset instance — fixed it instantly for us.

6. Request a hangar pad. This is the trick. Once landed, the game treats it as claimable. It shows up on your ASOP terminal like an owned ship.

New players: you don't even need to finish the mission. Just reach the ship.

Loot You'll Actually Get

Random rolls, but here's a real pull from our run:

Item Grade Verdict
CoverallMilitary B, Size 2 Shield Strong pull, above average
Beacon Military C Filler
Bracer Military C Filler
Chest armor Random (Pembroke, heavy sets)No helmet, ever
Weapon racks Ballistic + energy, full ammo Lootable once — see catch below

Expect 1 decent item + 2 filler items per run on average.

What Doesn't Work (Read This First)

Feature Status Why
Fly / store / recall Works Hangar claim unlocks this
Refuel via NPC beacon Mostly Crew despawned mid-service once, bugged systems briefly — re-log fixed it
Hangar rearm/refuel service No No ownership record = no service access
Swap components Works Normal swap process
Repair hull Partial Patches holes, stripped armor is gone for good
Refill weapon racks No Loot once, empty forever — kills the dropship idea
Reload ballistics manually No Swap weapon type instead
Log out in bed No Unowned ships block sleep/logout
Insurance No Nothing to claim, ever

Bottom line: great free ship, terrible long-term loadout carrier. The racks look useful — they're not, once emptied.

Farming Tips

  • Don't spam-decline the mission. Recco calls you out, then locks it for ~15-20 min.
  • Skip your loadout. Full gear sits inside the Cutlass already.
  • Bring a tractor beam, not weapons.
  • Finish the mission occasionally. Rep unlocks real hangar-bound ship grants — no caveats attached.

FAQ

Do I need to finish the mission to keep the ship?

No. Reach the Cutlass, request a hangar pad, done.

Can I insure this Cutlass?

No. No ownership record, no insurance claim.

Why can't I refill the weapon racks?

Tied to the ship's NPC-origin inventory. Not fixed as of 4.9.

Is refueling safe?

Mostly. Crew despawn bug happened once for us — re-log resolves it.

Will this get patched out?

Likely, eventually. Ownership checks on hangar storage are the obvious fix. Farm it while it works.

One mission, one free ship, one solid shield pull. Caveats aside — no rearm, no rack refills, no insurance — this is currently the cheapest Cutlass Black in the game. Run it, claim it, don't overthink the fine print.
