If your Subnautica 2 base loses power at night, you are probably relying too hard on solar panels. Solar works during the day. At night, your base needs stored reserve power.
That is what Power Storage fixes. It stores excess daytime energy and feeds it back when generation drops. For early solar bases, this is one of the most important utility blueprints to unlock.

↖ Subnautica 2 Power Storage: What It Does
Power Storage is a wall-mounted base module. It does not create power. It stores extra power.
| Function | Result |
|---|---|
| Stores surplus energy | Saves unused daytime power |
| Releases reserve energy | Keeps base online at night |
| Mounts on wall | Easy to place inside base |
| Can be toggled | Enable or disable manually |
| Works well with solar | Best early fix for night outages |
If your base still dies after building one, your power demand is too high. Add more generation or build more storage.

↖ Required Gear Before Unlocking Power Storage
Bring the right tools. Two fragments are easy to reach. The later ones need hot-zone access.
| Gear / Upgrade | Why You Need It |
|---|---|
| Scanner | Required for all Power Storage fragments |
| Heat Tolerance / Heat Adaptation | Needed for hot southeast/east fragments |
| Air Bladder | Helps with long cave dives |
| Rebreather | Useful for deeper cave routes |
| Sonic Resonator | Used to unlock Heat Tolerance progression |
| Beacon | Optional, useful for marking cave entrances |
Priority is simple: Scanner first, Heat Tolerance second.
↖ How to Unlock Heat Tolerance for Hot Power Storage Fragments
Some Power Storage fragments sit in hot water. If you enter without Heat Tolerance, you are wasting time.
To unlock Heat Tolerance:
1. Get the Sonic Resonator.
2. Go to the corrupted zone around 250 m north of the Life Pod.
3. Destroy the corrupted nodes.
4. Follow the tentacle path downward.
5. Clear the second corrupted area.
6. Activate the adaptation.
Once unlocked, you can safely reach the southeast cave, eastern hot platform, and Tadpole Pens area.
↖ All Power Storage Fragment Locations in Subnautica 2
You only need enough scans to unlock the blueprint. The safest route is Fragment 1 + Fragment 2.
| Fragment | Direction from Life Pod | Distance | Location | Heat Needed? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fragment 1 | 210–240° southwest | ~250 m | Rebreather cave / habitat | No |
| Fragment 2 | 105–120° southeast | ~350 m+ | Hot cave lower room | Yes |
| Fragment 3 | East | ~590 m | Hot platform before Tadpole Pens | Yes |
| Fragment 4 | East / northeast | ~660 m | Tadpole Pens interior | Yes + access |
Best route for most players: scan Fragment 1, unlock Heat Tolerance, scan Fragment 2, craft Power Storage.
↖ Power Storage Fragment 1: Southwest Rebreather Cave
From the Life Pod, head southwest, around 210–240°.
Travel about 250 m.
Look for:
- A huge drop-off
- Overhanging metal wreckage
- A tall spire
- A hole beneath the spire
Go down through the hole into the small habitat.
Scan the Power Storage fragment on the right-side wall.
Also scan what you can here:
| Extra Scan / Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Rebreather | Better deep exploration |
| Biobed | Useful progression scan |
| Single Bed / Shelf | Base building unlocks |
| Advanced Wiring Kit-related loot | Crafting progression |
Before leaving, check the nearby wreck slightly south. It has extra scans like Power Transmitter, lockers, furniture, data entries, and sometimes useful resources such as Lithium.
↖ Power Storage Fragment 2: Southeast Hot Cave
This is usually the second scan that unlocks the blueprint.
You need Heat Tolerance.
From the Life Pod, head southeast, around 105–120°.
Look for:
- Hot water warning
- Spire formations
- Large hole with leaning spires forming an A shape
- Cave route dropping deeper
Enter the large hole. Inside, angle down and right toward roughly 210°. Follow the crack to the lower room.
Scan the Power Storage fragment inside.
Useful finds nearby:
| Find | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Power Storage Fragment 2 | Unlocks the blueprint in most runs |
| Gold deposits | Important crafting material |
| Supply crate | Extra resources |
| Data bank entry | Story/progression info |
| Biobed | Additional scan utility |
Use air sacks if you see them. Bring an Air Bladder if your oxygen management is shaky.
↖ Optional Power Storage Fragment 3: East Hot Platform
This one is worth grabbing if you are already heading toward the Tadpole Pens.
From the Life Pod, head almost directly east.
Distance: about 590 m.
Landmarks:
- Very hot zone
- Spaghetti-like terrain
- Large wreckage
- Small platform before the Tadpole Pens area
Scan the Power Storage fragment in the box on or near the platform.
This is not the cleanest unlock route, but it is efficient during eastern exploration.
↖ Optional Power Storage Fragment 4: Tadpole Pens Interior
This fragment is deeper into progression.
From the hot platform, look northeast, around 60°, toward the Tadpole Pens.
Approximate distance from Life Pod: 660 m east.
Enter the Pens. If the interior door is unlocked, scan the Power Storage fragment along the wall in the room after entry.
Requirements:
- Heat Tolerance
- Scanner
- Tadpole Pens access
- Good oxygen management
Only bother with this one if you are already doing Tadpole Pens objectives.
↖ How to Craft Power Storage in Subnautica 2
After unlocking the blueprint, build it on a base wall.
| Material | Amount |
|---|---|
| Germanium | 1 |
| Titanium | 3 |
| Salt | 2 |
Place it somewhere visible. You want to see whether it is charging or draining.
↖ How to Use Power Storage
Power Storage starts working once placed and connected to base power.
| Situation | What Happens |
|---|---|
| Base produces surplus power | Power Storage charges |
| Solar panels stop at night | Power Storage discharges |
| Base demand is too high | Storage drains quickly |
| Module disabled | It stops supplying reserve power |
You can toggle it enabled / disabled by interacting with the module.
↖ Best Setup for Solar Bases
For early bases, use:
- Multiple solar panels
- At least one Power Storage
- More storage if you run Fabricators, oxygen systems, or power-hungry modules at night
If storage never fills, you do not have surplus power. Add generation first.
↖ Best Power Storage Unlock Route
Fast, safe, and low-waste route:
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Bring Scanner and Air Bladder |
| 2 | Head southwest to the Rebreather cave |
| 3 | Scan Power Storage Fragment 1 |
| 4 | Clear nearby wreck scans if needed |
| 5 | Unlock Heat Tolerance |
| 6 | Head southeast to the hot cave |
| 7 | Scan Power Storage Fragment 2 |
| 8 | Return to base and craft Power Storage |
This route gives the unlock without forcing late-game Tadpole Pens access.
↖ Common Power Storage Mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Thinking Power Storage generates power | It only stores surplus |
| Going to hot fragments without Heat Tolerance | Unlock adaptation first |
| Forgetting the Scanner | Bring it every time |
| Building one unit for a large base | Add more storage |
| Storage not charging | Add more solar panels or reduce power draw |
| Ignoring nearby scans | Clear wrecks while already there |
↖ FAQ
↖ Where is the first Power Storage fragment in Subnautica 2?
The first easy Power Storage fragment is southwest of the Life Pod, around 210–240° and about 250 m away. Look for a drop-off, metal wreckage, a tall spire, and a hole beneath it.
↖ Do you need Heat Tolerance to unlock Power Storage?
Not for the first fragment. You do need Heat Tolerance for the southeast hot cave, east hot platform, and Tadpole Pens Power Storage fragments.
↖ How do you craft Power Storage?
Craft Power Storage on a base wall with 1 Germanium, 3 Titanium, and 2 Salt.
↖ Why is my Power Storage not charging?
Your base has no surplus power. Add more solar panels, reduce power usage, or disable active modules until generation exceeds demand.
↖ Does Power Storage power your base at night?
Yes. It releases stored reserve energy when solar panels stop producing at night. If it drains too fast, build more Power Storage or increase daytime power generation.
↖ Summary
Unlock Power Storage early if your Subnautica 2 base runs on solar. It is the cleanest fix for night power loss.
Best route: southwest Rebreather cave fragment → Heat Tolerance → southeast hot cave fragment → craft with 1 Germanium, 3 Titanium, 2 Salt.
Remember the rule: Power Storage stores power; it does not generate it. If the module stays empty, your base needs more energy production before it needs more storage.
