Boss fights in ARK Survival Ascended are not won by throwing your biggest dinos at the arena door. That works once. Then the Dragon deletes your Rexes, your Daeodon runs out of food, or your army body-blocks itself into extinction.
The real formula is simple: damage + resistance + healing + saddle quality + boss-specific mechanics. We want creatures that either hit hard, survive long, or make the whole army stronger.
Here is the ranked list, trimmed for players who want practical picks, not museum facts.

| 10 | Rex | General bosses | Reliable classic damage dealer |
| 9 | Deinosuchus | ASA boss damage | Huge health, strong burst attacks |
| 8 | Megalosaurus | Night boss fights | Extremely strong at night |
| 7 | Deinonychus | Boss bleed | One of the best boss bleed options |
| 6 | Shadowmane | Advanced boss teams | Natural armor, buffs, high DPS |

| 4 | Acrocanthosaurus | Damage + support | Adrenaline buff can swing fights |
| 3 | Deinotherium | Team support | Attack and defense rally buffs |
| 2 | Therizinosaurus | Most main bosses | Cakes + high DPS + smaller hitbox |

If you only remember one thing: Yutyrannus wins fights indirectly. Therizinos win them directly.

↖ Best ARK Boss Fighting Creatures: Full Ranking
↖ 20. Mek / Mega Mek
The Mek is not a normal boss creature, but for Extinction Titans, it is mandatory-level tech.
It cannot enter standard boss arenas. That is the only reason it sits this low.
| Mek Option | Use |
|---|---|
| Shield Module | Blocks projectiles, gives allies 30% damage reduction inside bubble |
| Rocket Module | Burst damage with rocket pods |
| Cannon Module | Heavy single-target damage |
| Mega Mek Module | Core tool for Alpha King Titan |
Use it for King Titan, not for normal boss progression.
↖ 19. Dreadnoughtus
The Dreadnoughtus is built for Titans. Its key selling point is Titan Slayer, giving 50% increased damage and resistance against Titans.
The catch: the buff requires spacing. If multiple Dreadnoughtus are too close, you lose the value.
Best use:
- Ice Titan
- Forest Titan
- Desert Titan support
- King Titan army filler
If you stack them blindly, they become weaker than they look on paper.
↖ 18. Giganotosaurus / Carcharodontosaurus
These two are boss-adjacent monsters. They cannot enter most main boss arenas, but they dominate open-world endgame content.
| Creature | Better For | Key Strength |
|---|---|---|
| Giga | Titan damage | High consistent bite damage |
| Carcharodontosaurus | OSDs, Tek Cave clearing | Bloodrage up to 175% damage/healing |
For Alpha Tek Cave, the Carchar is excellent because it can fit through the entrance and clear the route fast.
Hard rule: keep meat on your Carchar. Bloodrage healing drains food fast.
↖ 17. Spinosaurus
The Spino is good when the arena has water. Without water, it falls behind Rexes and Therizinos.
Hydrated buff gives:
| Stat | Bonus |
|---|---|
| Melee damage | +15% |
| Movement speed | +20% |
| Health regeneration | +25% |
| Duration after leaving water | 30 seconds |
Use Spinos in water-heavy arenas. Skip them for dry arenas unless your breeding line is already strong.
↖ 16. Oodon
The Oodon is powerful but annoying to build around. It is rare, map-limited, and requires rider trust stacking.
Its Monstrous Affection buff stacks over time with the same rider, improving several levelable stats and movement speed.
Why it ranks lower:
- Rare spawn
- Paid DLC restriction
- Hard to breed quickly
- Needs rider consistency
If your server has easy access to high-level Oodons, it moves up fast. On normal progression, it is too much work for most tribes.
↖ 15. Woolly Rhino
The Woolly Rhino is not an army creature. It is a player weapon.
Its charge attack can deal disgusting burst damage when fully built up. It also benefits from Sweet Veggie Cakes, which matters in longer fights.
| Strength | Problem |
|---|---|
| Huge charge damage | Bad when unridden |
| Can use cakes | Needs space to charge |
| Rider can use weapons | Poor solo army value |
Best used in multiplayer. If one player rides Rhino while another manages Yuty roar, the damage spike is very real.
↖ 14. Ceratosaurus
The Ceratosaurus is a support pick for carnivore armies.
Its value comes from Envenomed and Healing Surge, which can help allied carnivores recover while attacking affected targets.
Use it with:
- Rexes
- Shadowmanes
- Carnivore-heavy armies
Do not force it into herbivore teams. If your army is Therizinos, cakes already do the healing job better.
↖ 13. Daeodon
The Daeodon heals. That is the whole reason to bring it.
It drains food extremely fast, so a bad Daeodon setup gives you five seconds of healing and then becomes dead weight with tusks.
| Priority | Why |
|---|---|
| Food stat | More food = more healing |
| Cooked meat / kibble / food stack | Keeps healing active |
| Rider control | Prevents waste |
| Post-fight healing | Best use for chain boss runs |
For solo players, Daeodon inside the arena is often awkward. For repeated boss farming, it is excellent between fights.
↖ 12. Megatherium
The Megatherium is the Broodmother specialist.
Against insects, it becomes absurd.
| Effect | Value |
|---|---|
| Bonus damage to insects | +50% |
| Insect Killer buff | +250% damage |
| Damage reduction during buff | 75% |
| Buff duration | 2 minutes |
Broodmother summons spider minions. Megatherium kills them, gets buffed, then melts the boss.
Outside insect fights, it is just decent. Against Broodmother, it is elite.
↖ 11. Mammoth
The Mammoth is underrated. Strong health, solid damage, easy saddle access, and good frontline presence.
The issue is size. Too many Mammoths will body-block each other and reduce actual DPS.
Best use:
- Mixed herbivore armies
- Early-to-mid boss progression
- Tanking while smaller DPS creatures work
If you run Mammoths, bring a few. Do not fill every slot.
↖ 10. Rex
The Rex is still the default boss creature for a reason.
It is easy to understand, easy to breed, and reliable. Good health. Good damage. No gimmick.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Strong base health | Cannot use cakes |
| Strong damage | Large body |
| Easy to tame | Saddle blueprint grind |
| Works in many fights | Less sustain than Therizino |
The biggest wall is the saddle. A strong Rex with a weak saddle dies like an expensive mistake.
Farm high-quality Rex saddle blueprints before pushing Alpha bosses.
↖ 9. Deinosuchus
The Deinosuchus is one of ASA's strongest raw combat mounts.
It has huge health, no oxygen stat, and strong attacks. No oxygen stat matters because wild stat rolls are less likely to be wasted.
Its Gigabite can hit extremely hard. Boss-specific nerfs reduced some bleed-style value, but the raw stats still carry.
Use it when:
- You want a tanky ASA damage dealer
- You have strong health/melee breeding stats
- You need a semi-aquatic powerhouse outside arenas too
It is not as universal as Therizino, but it is absolutely boss-worthy.
↖ 8. Megalosaurus
The Megalosaurus is a night demon and a daytime liability.
At night, its damage is excellent. During the day, it becomes sleepy trash.
| Condition | Result |
|---|---|
| Night boss fight | Very strong |
| Day boss fight | Do not bring it |
| ASA behavior | Much better unridden attacks |
| ASE behavior | Often unreliable due to grab behavior |
If you use Megalosaurus, time the fight properly. Start at night. Finish before morning.
This is not optional. This is the difference between a boss kill and watching your army take a nap in the arena.
↖ 7. Deinonychus
The Deinonychus is fragile, but its bleed makes it dangerous.
Its bleed can work against bosses, which gives it real value even when it is not tanking.
| Strength | Weakness |
|---|---|
| Boss-effective bleed | Low health |
| Fast and mobile | Needs rider skill |
| Great against large bosses | Dies fast if misplayed |
Best setup: bring one ridden Deinonychus for bleed while your main army tanks.
Against large bosses like Dragon, skilled positioning can let you chew through health safely.
↖ 6. Shadowmane
The Shadowmane is one of the best boss creatures ever added to ARK.
No saddle needed. It has natural armor. It has strong damage. It has pack value. It has buffs. It works well in water.
| Feature | Boss Value |
|---|---|
| Natural armor | Saves saddle grind |
| Charged attack | Strong burst |
| Male roar | Buffs allies |
| Hydrated buff | Great in water arenas |
| Rider weapon use | Extra damage option |
| Pack bonus | More damage and resistance |
Its only real issue in ASA is availability. In ASE or modded/server setups, it is a top-tier boss pick.
↖ 5. Pyromane
The Pyromane is a high-value ASA boss creature, especially against fire-heavy threats.
It has natural armor, burn damage, self-healing tools, and a damage boost.
| Pyromane Tool | Effect |
|---|---|
| Inflamed | Stacking burn damage |
| Flame Absorb | Healing and fire energy gain |
| Flame Boost Roar | Up to 50% damage boost |
| Natural armor | No saddle needed |
| Fire resistance | Strong Dragon value |
Weakness: water.
If the arena has water or punishes fire creatures, do not force it. Against Dragon-style content, it shines.
↖ 4. Acrocanthosaurus
The Acrocanthosaurus is not just a damage dealer. It is a fight controller.
Its Adrenaline Mode gives damage, healing, attack speed, and can share power with nearby allies.
| Ability | Use |
|---|---|
| Shield stance | Soaks damage |
| Taunt | Pulls boss/minion attention |
| Adrenaline roar | Boosts self |
| Ally adrenaline buff | Buffs nearby creatures |
| Stomp | Heavy damage and control |
The important part: it stacks well with other support.
A team with Yutyrannus + Deinotherium + Acro hits much harder than a basic Rex ball.
Best when ridden. Unridden Acros lose a lot of value.
↖ 3. Deinotherium
The Deinotherium is a premium support herbivore.
It brings rally buffs that affect nearby allies, not just its own species.
| Sex | Buff | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Male | Attack Rally | +15% damage |
| Female | Defense Rally | +5% resistance, stacks up to 3 times |
Best practical setup:
| Creature | Count |
|---|---|
| Male Deinotherium | 1 |
| Female Deinotherium | 3 |
| Yutyrannus | 1 |
| Main DPS creatures | Remaining slots |
Do not overfill with them. They are large. Use them as support, not as the whole army.
↖ 2. Therizinosaurus
The Therizinosaurus is the best general boss DPS creature for most players.
It has strong damage, a smaller body than Rex, and most importantly, it can use Sweet Veggie Cakes.
| Why Therizino Wins | Result |
|---|---|
| High claw DPS | Boss health drops fast |
| Herbivore | Uses cakes |
| Smaller body | Less blocking |
| Great Dragon matchup | Better sustain than Rex |
| Strong with Yuty buff | Excellent scaling |
For Dragon, Therizinos are often the safer pick than Rexes because fire damage punishes carnivore-heavy strategies hard.
Load cakes. Use good saddles. Keep the Yuty roar active. That setup clears a lot of ARK's hardest content.
↖ 1. Yutyrannus
The Yutyrannus is the best boss creature in ARK because it buffs the entire army.
It does not need to deal damage. It makes every other creature better.
| Courage Roar Bonus | Value |
|---|---|
| Allied damage | +25% |
| Allied damage resistance | +20% |
That is massive.
If you bring 18 damage creatures, one Yuty improves all 18 at once. No single extra Rex gives that much value.
Best practice:
- Solo: ride the Yutyrannus yourself
- Group: assign one player to roar duty
- Keep roar uptime high
- Stay close enough to buff the army
- Do not get pinned under the boss
A boss army without Yuty is simply weaker. No debate.
↖ Best Boss Team Setups in ARK
↖ General Boss Setup
| Creature | Count | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Yutyrannus | 1 | Main buff |
| Therizinosaurus | 17–18 | Main DPS |
| Deinotherium / Acro | 1–2 | Extra support |
| Daeodon | 0–1 | Optional healing |
This is the safest all-purpose setup for most serious boss attempts.
↖ Broodmother Setup
| Creature | Count | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Yutyrannus | 1 | Courage roar |
| Megatherium | 18–19 | Main DPS |
| Daeodon | Optional | Healing |
Megatherium is the correct answer here. The insect buff is too strong to ignore.
↖ Dragon Setup
| Creature | Count | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Yutyrannus | 1 | Buff |
| Therizinosaurus | 18–19 | Main DPS |
| Pyromane | Optional | Fire-resistant damage |
Rexes can work. Therizinos are usually safer.
The reason is simple: Sweet Veggie Cakes.
↖ Extinction Titan Setup
| Creature / Tool | Role |
|---|---|
| Mega Mek | Alpha King Titan strategy |
| Dreadnoughtus | Titan damage and tanking |
| Giga | Fast burst damage |
| Carcharodontosaurus | OSDs and add-heavy fights |
| Mek Shield Module | Defensive utility |
Titan fights are not normal boss fights. Think mobility, burst windows, and survival tools.
↖ Boss Prep Checklist
Before starting serious boss runs, check this list.
| Requirement | Target |
|---|---|
| Saddles | High armor blueprint, not primitive |
| Yutyrannus | High health, stamina, good saddle |
| Therizinos | Cakes in inventory |
| Daeodon | High food, loaded with food |
| Main army | Imprinted and leveled |
| Positioning | Avoid body-blocking |
| Buffs | Yuty roar active before contact |
If your army dies fast, the problem is usually bad saddles or no support buffs.
If the boss survives too long, the problem is usually low melee or poor roar uptime.
↖ FAQ
↖ What is the best boss creature in ARK?
The Yutyrannus is the best overall boss creature because Courage Roar gives +25% damage and +20% damage resistance to nearby allies. For direct DPS, Therizinosaurus is the best general pick.
↖ Are Rexes still good for ARK boss fights?
Yes. Rexes are still strong, especially for players with an established breeding line. Their weakness is sustain. They cannot use Sweet Veggie Cakes, so Therizinos often perform better in long or fire-heavy fights.
↖ What is the best creature for Broodmother?
Megatherium is the best Broodmother counter. Spider minions trigger Insect Killer, giving huge bonus damage and damage reduction. Add a Yutyrannus and good saddles for clean kills.
↖ What is the best creature for Dragon?
Therizinosaurus is the safest standard Dragon pick. It deals strong damage and can heal with Sweet Veggie Cakes. Pyromane can also perform well where available because of its fire-related strengths.
↖ Should we bring a Daeodon into boss fights?
Bring a Daeodon if you can feed and manage it. It is great for healing, but it burns food extremely fast. Solo players often get more value using it between boss runs instead of inside the arena.
↖ Summary
For most ARK boss progression, build around this core:
| Role | Best Pick |
|---|---|
| Best support | Yutyrannus |
| Best general DPS | Therizinosaurus |
| Best classic DPS | Rex |
| Best Broodmother killer | Megatherium |
| Best Titan tool | Mega Mek |
| Best Titan creature | Dreadnoughtus |
| Best bleed utility | Deinonychus |
| Best healer | Daeodon |
The strongest practical army is usually Yutyrannus + Therizinosaurus + strong saddles + cakes.
Add Deinotherium or Acrocanthosaurus when you want higher-end support stacking. Use Megatherium for Broodmother. Use Mek and Dreadnoughtus for Titans.
Boss fights punish lazy prep. Good saddles, correct buffs, and the right creature for the right arena beat raw stats every time.
