Path of Exile 2 Witch Class Overview: Blood Mage vs Infernalist

The Witch class of Path of Exile 2 can be classified as a ranged tank with burst damage capability. Keeping in mind the Bam Blood Mage concept which will now return with the Infernalist build, players will have plenty of room for experimentation when it comes to builds that rely on dealing chaos damage and summoning minions. This guide looks into the skills and combos that can enable the Witch class to be incredibly strong in both the early and late stages of the game.

Key Skills & Combos

Contagion & Essence Drain

  • Combination: A classic from POE1, ideal for Chaos Damage over time builds.
  • Features: Spreads Chaos DOT debuffs to nearby enemies upon death.
  • Advantages: Excellent for clearing large packs with Essence Drain as the main damage source.

Contagion and Essence Drain

Skeletal Minions

  • Types: Skeletal Warrior, Skeletal Cleric, Skeletal Arsonist.
  • Usage: Basic minions for frontline defense and ranged damage.
  • Special Abilities: Clerics can heal and revive other skeletons.

Skeletal Frost Mage + Skeletal Storm Mage

  • Comparison: Both offer great AoE; Storm Mages are more cost-effective.
  • Benefits: Lightning Damage from Storm Mages can shock enemies for increased damage.

Skeletal Reaver

  • Role: Ideal for melee-oriented minion army.
  • Mechanics: Can enrage for significantly stronger hits.
  • Drawbacks: Health loss makes them less consistent but offers high damage bursts.

Skeletal Reaver

Hexblast

  • Potential: A promising Chaos skill with high damage output.
  • Combination: Works well with Blasphemy Aura for constant curses.
  • Limitation: Cast Time of 1 second may feel high.

Haxblast

Detonate Dead

  • Interaction: Works with corpses alongside Unearth and Profane Ritual.
  • Strengths: Historically strong low-budget skill from POE1.
  • Consideration: Choose one corpse-related skill as they remove corpses upon use.

Detonate Dead and Unearth

Curses: Vulnerability, Enfeeble, Despair

  • Purpose: Improve Chaos or Phys damage or enhance survivability.
  • Strategy: Choose one or two based on build; combine with Blasphemy for aura effect.

Vulnerability, Enfeeble, Despair

Dark Effigy

  • Functionality: Provides a Totem that attacks enemies affected by DOT effects.
  • Complementary Skills: Supports Contagion and Essence Drain combinations.

1. Sanguimancy
  • Purpose: Unlocks all other Ascendancy nodes.
  • Functionality: Drops Life Remnants upon defeating monsters, which replenish life when collected.
  • Cost: Converts base mana cost of skills to base life cost.
2. Vitality Siphon
  • Effect: 10% of spell damage leeched as life.
  • Advantage: Essential for spell-related Blood Mages to maintain life leech.
  • Combination: Works well with Voracious Node (20% instant leech) or Vaal Pact Keystone (all life leech is instant).
3. Gore Spike
  • Benefit: 1% increased critical damage per 20 life.
  • Potential: With 2000 life, gain 200% increased critical bonus.
  • Reason to Choose: Ideal for life-stacking strategies.
4. Crimson Power
  • Addition: Converts energy shield from body armor to maximum life.
  • Synergy: Complements Gore Spike effectively.
  • Cost: Requires four points and one unrevealed passive.

Infernalist Ascendancy

Infernalist Ascendancy Overview

Essential Skills and  Passives

Demonic Possession
  • Effect: Transform the witch into a demon form.
  • Pros: Enhanced power and speed of casting.
  • Cons: It begins to deal damage to the user over time; once health is depleted to 1, it ceases.
  • Strategy: Must use regeneration or leech in order to gain health back for self-sustaining.
Loyal Hellhound
  • Effect: Spawn a burning minion that puts a blaze on enemies.
  • Additional Benefit: Reduces 20% of incoming damage to the player.
  • Comparison: Has similar abilities as the guardian minion from PoE 1.
  • Consideration: Depends upon damage quantity; provides good tanking potential.
Pyromantic Pact
  • Effect: The ability to replenish mana is replaced by an infernal flame.
  • Mechanics:
    • When casting skills, infernal flame is generated
    • When maximum is attained, Maximum Life and Energy Shield are gained as fire damage
    • The attack damage is set to fire damage which is understood using fire resistance
  • Drawback: Infernal flame decreases by 10% a second without use.
  • Advantage: Provides a nice solution to mana without having a lot of drawbacks.

4. Bringer of Flame
  • Effect: When on low amount of infernal flame, there are better chances of igniting.
  • Synergy: Does not allow the flame to die which makes it better in conjunction with the pyromantic pact.
  • Recommendation: A must-have when your strategy includes focusing on ignitions.

Summary:  There is no better build than ignite builds as it focuses on fire damage and igniting. Less suited to non-ignite builds, restricting it to a very unique specialization within the Witch class.

The Witch class in Path of Exile 2 combines both dark magic and life stacking which makes them both deadly and somewhat difficult to control. If you want to deal Chaos Damage, dislike minion management, or use curses, Witch can accomplish it all in PoE 2 for you!
