No vendor stocks it. No crafting bench makes it. The NDB-30 is functionally a grade-A component, and the only way to get one is looting disabled NPC ships.
Good news: it's not hard. It's just RNG-gated. Here's the loop we ran, tested, and confirmed works.

↖ Why Bother With the NDB-30
Post-nerf, S3 ballistics got gutted. Distortion is the new meta for light fighters, and the NDB-30 outperforms almost everything else in its class.
| Weapon | Source | Strength | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| NDB-30 (S3) | Loot only | High distortion + damage | Disable + fight hybrid |
| Standard S3 Ballistic | Shop | Kinetic (nerfed) | Sustained DPS |
| Standard S3 Laser | Shop | Steady energy | General use |
If you're flying a light fighter in 4.9, this is your upgrade — for free.
↖ Where to Farm It: Area 5 Combat Gauntlet
MobiGlas → Contracts → Mercenary tab. Rank up through Area 1 to 5 fast — the ladder scales quick.
Area 5 is the target tier. It spawns Freelancers, and Freelancers carry NDB-30s.
Lower tiers? Don't bother. We tested them — no NDB drops.
↖ The Loadout That Works
Ran this in a Cutlass Black. Not a meta ship. Proves you don't need one.
| Slot | Weapon | Job |
|---|---|---|
| Primary | Sucker Punch (distortion) | Disable hull |
| Secondary | Cannons | Strip shields |
| Utility | Flares | Dodge missiles |
Both weapons: New Babbage gun shop. No rep grind required.
Workflow: cannons down shields → scroll wheel switch → Sucker Punch disables hull. Distortion only works once shields drop — don't skip the order.
↖ Farming Steps
1. Accept Area 5. Mixed wave: Freelancers, Firebirds, Vanguards.
2. Kill the Firebird first. Its ballistic turret hits hardest up close.
3. Cannons on shields, Sucker Punch on hull. Disable, don't destroy.
4. Scan before committing. Not every Freelancer has NDBs.
5. No NDBs? Abandon and retake. Mission refreshes in 1-2 minutes. Faster than fighting a dead-end ship.
6. NDBs confirmed? Breach fast. Second wave brings missiles the second ports unlock.
7. Ping radar to relocate. Disabled ships drop EM signature — they go dark on scanners.
Loot tip: a Freelancer with NDBs on both main mounts and turret = 4 weapons, one ship. Happened on our second reset.
↖ RNG: What to Actually Expect
Roughly 1 in 2-3 Freelancers carries NDBs. Rest spawn with standard CF or ballistic repeaters.
Best run: NDBs on reset #2.
Worst run: took 5 resets.
Three empty ships in a row isn't bad luck. It's just the table working as intended. Keep resetting.
↖ Combat Warnings
- Vanguard's deadbolt missile one-shots small ships. Get careless, get deleted. Missile it first if you're in anything fragile.
- Firebird ballistics hit harder than expected — untouched by the S3 nerf.
- Loot fast, leave faster. Once hull ports unlock, remaining hostiles focus you down.
↖ Bonus Loot
Disabled Vanguards and Freelancers drop grade-C military components too. Not the target here, but free upgrades if you're passing through.
↖ FAQ
↖ What is the NDB-30 and why isn't it sold anywhere?
It's a size-3 distortion repeater classified as a grade-A component. No shop sells grade-A gear — looting disabled ships is the only source in 4.9.
↖ Which mission drops the NDB-30 most reliably?
Area 5 Combat Gauntlet, under MobiGlas → Contracts → Mercenary. Freelancer spawns here carry it.
↖ Do I need a meta combat ship to farm this?
No. A Cutlass Black works fine. A Nomad or similar light fighter works just as well — loadout matters more than hull.
↖ Is the NDB-30 drop guaranteed on every Freelancer?
No. Roughly 1 in 2-3 Freelancers spawn with it. If a target lacks NDBs, abandon and retake — faster than wasting time on a dead-end fight.
↖ How do I find a disabled ship after combat?
Ping your radar. Disabled ships drop EM signature low enough to vanish passively — a ping brings them back on scan.
↖ Bottom Line
No crafting. No rep grind. No shop purchase. Just Area 5 Combat Gauntlet, a distortion + shield-strip loadout, and enough patience to reset when RNG says no. Run the loop right, disengage fast, and you'll walk away with one of the strongest free S3 weapons in the build.
